The king of the north!
Interesting thread and hard to remember all of the changes but my members market history helps.

GT210 - my first “dedicated” gpu in a pre built dell.
Ati 5670 which was upgraded into my dell.
gtx 580 from PNY? that went into a brand new build with an i7 920.
rtx 680
780 x2
gtx 970 X4
gtx 1060
Gtx 1080 x 2
2080Super
3080
4080

few side grades few downgrades but all in the interest of experimenting

Sorry if I posted previously, thread is a bit long now. Here is my current tree:

Asus Ti4200 64Mb (overclocked to 4600 speeds)
Sapphire 9800pro
HIS Excalibur X800XT [Edit: not Sapphire]
Nvidia GTX 280
Palit 2x GTX 480 SLI
Nvidia GTX 780Ti [Edit: not a 680Ti]
EVGA GTX 980Ti
Asus TUF RTX 3080
Nvidia RTX 4800 FE

All were great cards. I remember how great the 9800pro was against the competition in anti-aliasing, and how good the 3080 was in raytracing at 1080p. The SLI 480s were ridiculously hot in my HTPC case and the others were just solid for their time.

Much better, happy to see you didn't fall for the midrange chip sold as a 80 class chip with the 680 . The start of the fake naming.

At least @FloppyPoppy got rtx on his 680  ;).
Yep I remember the 600 series being a disappointment. My twin 480s were more than enough at 1080p at that time and I played a lot more Xbox 360 and then PS4 in the following years as I was away from home at University / first jobs in London.

I got back into PC gaming properly with the 780Ti after I moved to Switzerland (lower VAT) and got a great deal in a sale. Been upgrading every 2 generations ever since until I got a promotion and now I can afford to sell on my old card to upgrade every generation.

9800 GT £?? (Part of a pre built system)
HD 4850 512MB £150 120%

2009
HD 4870X2 2GB £343 228%

2011
HD 6870 1GB £127 90% (Stopgap as 4870X2 died)

2013
HD 7950 3GB £167 152%

2016
RX 480 8GB £240 192%

2020
5700 XT 8GB £360 187%

Edit: 2023
RX 6800 16GB £370 169%

I don't upgrade often and consider £350 to be my upper limit for a significant upgrade, a limit I have admittedly pushed for the last two upgrades. The percentage listed relates to the performance versus the previous card.

I usually buy cards on heavy discount or when they're EOL, the only card I bought on or close to release was the RX480.

I did originally start PC gaming, as we know it, on a pre built system circa 1999 but have no recollection of the specs, I then moved exclusively to consoles from 2002 to 2008.

It all truly started on a ZX Spectrum at some point in the mid-late 80's but that's for another thread.

I don't upgrade often and have never spent over £360 on a GPU, looks like I'll be waiting a good while for my next upgrade.

I've been watching and been tempted but realistically they need to be closer to £400 to make me lay down some money. The 6800XT is the minimum performance increase I'd need for a worthwhile upgrade.

If I can grab one when they're EOL for around £400 I will, otherwise I can wait.

2002 ASUS GeForce 4400 Ti - had it for ages in various PC's, gave it away about ten years ago.
200? XFX GeForce 6800 256MB - failed, power supply connection burnt out.
200? ASUS GeForce 8800 GT 512MB - failed, would only work in safe mode and drivers wouldn't recognise it.
2009 Gigabyte HD 5770 1GB - still in use in wife's PC.
2010 ASUS HD 6950 DirectCU II 2GB - failed, repaired, kept as a spare.
2012 ASUS HD 7970 DirectCU II 2GB - still in use in son's PC at university.
2017 Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1060 Xtreme 6GB - still in use in son's PC at home.
2019 Gigabyte Aorus RTX 2060 Xtreme 6GB - my current PC.

Currently looking to upgrade, but still undecided as to what to get.
