Your worst holiday experience?

There is certainly a pattern in this thread :s

I don't have any stand out memories of a truly terrible holiday but on the food poisoning theme there was a time when I was a kid where one of my sisters and myself woke up with pretty bad food poisoning on the day we were travelling up from the South West to the Lake District for a holiday combined with my other sister always suffered from travel sickness on long drives that was a lovely journey :s and IIRC when we got closer heavy rain and thunderstorms moved in and what was forecast as a great week of sun was instead a washout.

Was on holiday in Fuerteventura and drove to a secluded beach, parked up and got out to walk down to the beach. Passing through some dunes and up ahead we saw something odd we couldnt make out as we were too far away, carried on walking and got to the point we realised what it was. It was a granny bent over, backside towards us stark naked. The wife and I were like wtf, took a diversion towards the beach and soon realised it was a nudist beach and it was populated with old people with their bits hanging out all over the place. We left pretty sharpish

I know which beach you are talking about. Randomly ended up there after I was looking for a different beach to visit and it got good reviews on Google..... Nothing said it being a nudist beach!

I didn't stay.

A week before we went I was on a Gran Canaria Group and somebody asked the question "Me and my husband are coming to GC in June, we are swingers and want to know the best hotel?". There was at least 20 replies saying Greenfields :)
I was sitting with 4x rough Scots who had just arrived and had no idea, a bloke approached them and started to chat them up but they were so taken aback they were like little kids.
They looked at me and said "What's going on?".
I said I'll take one of them somewhere and we caught the lift to the top floor and then walked the last bit to the rooftop where they were all in the nude doing things :)

Seriously this was the bloke chatting them up and they are sitting to the left :)

going to skegness, great yarmouth or blackpool, I can't remember which.
but my I was probably about 6 and needed a pee so my dad stopped in a layby, I started peeing on the back wheel of the car and my sister decided to push me into some nettles.

for some reason its burnt into my memory but she can;t remeber it ever happening.

then when we got home we found the house completelly turned over, food, tomato sauce etc thrown all over the walls and furniture, everything pretty much trashed.
Never went on a family holiday as a child again after that.

Know who did it and many decades later still think about paying them a visit.

My parents went to Bulgaria when I was 5 or 6. I got food poisoning and had the trotts constantly. It got to the point where my mother had enough of taking me to the toilet and I had to go in the sea. Only time I ever had a poo underwater.

In Egypt with dodgy guts.
At the beach, I put too much trust in a fart and regretted it.
After going back to the hotel to change i went to a pharmancy to get something to help with my anal leakage.
Got back to the beach and tried to swallow the rather large pill, which got stuck in my throat and caused me to vomit over myself, which required another trip back the hotel.

The worst part was that I had a scuba diving session later that day and I spent the whole time praying I didnt **** in the wetsuit.

I've got a really weird one. I fully expect someone to reply saying they were there as well after this...

Went on holiday to Spain when I was maybe 7 years old. Sat in the hotel lobby with parents and sister. Fairly busy. Lots of laughter, chatter and talking. It's a big lobby. Suddenly there's this ear piercing shatter of glass. The lobby goes absolutely silent. A few seconds pass. Then suddenly screaming. A young kid has ran full pelt into a massive pane of glass. Assume it might have been from coming in from bright sun into the darker lobby, maybe a big revolving door, not sure. All I can remember as a kid is walking back up to my room, but every step up this long winding staircase was covered in blood. Blood absolutely everywhere. This kid must have gone back to his room the same way as to where our room was. Don't know what happened to the child.

Fast forward many, many years later. I was in English class at school, maybe GCSE years, and we had to describe a moment on holiday that stood out. Literally like this thread. Before it gets to my turn to read mine out, a lad in my class who I didn't really know, reads out almost word for word my above story. I start freaking out and nearly have a panic attack, like am I mad...what are the chances etc. Get's to my turn and I basically lie to the teacher that I've not got anything, as thought nobody would believe me and that I copied his idea. There's no chance he could have seen my book or anything either so he must have also been there! Proper weird.

Touch wood i don't think I've had any real bad holidays, we've suffered delays and almost had a bag go missing once.

So the worst for me is probably a lads holiday to Maga back in 08 just as we'd all turned 18. We had a room next door to some right scouse roughens (the type that would mug their nan), they seemed all friendly at first and two of my idiotic mates invited them in for a beer, and they were telling us none of them had travel insurance and their mate had jumped off a balcony and had to go to hospital so was lumped with a big bill he couldn't afford.
Anyway later on we get ready to go out and we noticed that the room keycard that was in the slot behind the door to activate the electric was gone (we were given one each, and as we were all out together it made sense to leave one in the electric slot in the hotel room). Luckily it was a knackered card that didn't work with our door so probably the reason we left it in the electric slot. We figured at that point these scouse lads must have stolen it. I think we went out that night anyway and when we came back to go to sleep it wasn't long after being in bed that we heard someone outside trying the keycard and door to get in. Thankfully it didn't work as they'd have probably come in and mugged us at knifepoint.

Proper weird.

Awhile back I was searching to find an old movie I saw in hospital once and came across a post by someone else who described the exact same circumstances of seeing the movie in hospital while also recovering from the same operation and roughly the same year which was kind of weird - almost word for word my experience.

I once went backpacking, stayed in a hostel dorm room in Nimbin, SE Australia - a place notorious for stoners/weed.

Smoked an incredible amount of skunk, got drunk in a pub with some irish lads, went out to a nightclub and passed out in a corner in a pool of my own vomit. I was frogmarched to the entrance by the bouncers and thrown onto the pavement. Laid there for god knows how long, then somehow staggered back to the hostel. Passed out, then woke up to hear two in the dorm shagging in one of the nearby beds. Someone shouted at them to get out and screw somewhere else, I'm not even sure it was me. Woke up a few hours later with an incredible hangover, to find an old presumably used condom down the side of my pillow (not mine) from the previous occupant that I hadn't noticed when I checked in.

Suffice to say, I checked out pretty fast and moved on to Sydney.

I've been there too. It was nice

My upcoming Portugal holiday/road trip is with a match from a dating app.

What could go wrong?

Most likely nothing :D

Update to thread pending....

I can’t really say I’ve had a bad holiday, some have been eventful and gave some stories to tell but I’ve still had a blast

My food poisoning / poo story

In Thailand I sat down to eat some chicken fried rice at a small street restaurant , I had been feeling ok up to that point but on the first bite before I had even swallowed it I started feeling nauseous , dizzy and a bit lethargic . I managed about 2 mouthfuls before my appetite vanished . I had eaten all kinds at a street market the day before so I suspected I had eaten something that didn’t agree.

We headed to a bar close by and I really could not stomach any beer so I got a short and sipped it slowly. Played pool a couple of times then started to wretch so I went to the toilet , this was a contender for the worst toilet in the world , a horrible room that was filthy, smelly, old and falling apart plus there was other random stuff stored in there. I stayed in the loo for a while but I didn’t throw up although I felt a lot better after wretching so much.
I went back into the bar and started sipping my drink again but after a while I had that horrible feeling I was about to vomit quite violently, I went back to the ****hole again and I just about managed to get the door locked when I vomitted, it came out like a volcanic eruption, it went all over the toilet and the wall and was dripping chunks of half digested food onto the floor around the pan, I managed to lean over the loo when I spewed again and again , eventually I stopped being sick and gasped a sigh of relief .

It was just seconds after that calm moment of what I thought was the going to be the end of it that I felt that horrible bloaty stomach pain and the desperate need to evacuate my bowels .
there was nothing I could do to stop what was coming and I didn’t have time to cleanup from the vomitting , I rapidly aimed my bum at pan and pulled down my shorts and unleashed gallons of some foul smelling brown liquid that had small bits in it ,i didn’t have the energy to try and position myself so that I was kind of squatting over the loo so the only thing I could do was to sit in my own vomit.

When the clear out had finished I was a shaking wreck, sweating but shivering, remnants of vomit dripping from my nose with that horrible acidic smell, a bum that felt like it was burning , dizzy with no energy and covered in my own mess . It was at this point leaning forward with my head in my hands I started to contemplate that this is possibly the lowest point of my life , then from amongst some of the things stored in there a cockroach appeared, it scurried across the floor and onto my foot where it stopped for a moment , I felt it was looking at me , judging me for being the disgusting creature that I am , I just nodded in agreement as if it would understand somehow , then it scurried away.

I spent the next 4 days in the villa we had rented feeling very tired and dizzy and constantly running to the loo, but I didn’t feel like being sick anymore which was something at least.

In an AirBNB apartment above the Angolan Embassy, Gamla Stan, Stockholm.

Unexpected.

A few strange/annoying memories:
  • A toilet block in Russia, at a motorway stop between St Petersburg and Novgorod I think. Two rows of cubicles facing each other, holes in the floor type. Miniscule doors with about a 1ft gap at the bottom and no higher than chest height. You were quite literally looking directly at someone while taking a P. Very strange.
  • Local wrong'un tried to rob me at Bucharest train station, Romania. With a 'let me show you which coach you're in' and then threatening 'give me your money now' approach once on the train.
  • Taking The Ghan from Alice Springs to Adelaide, Australia. 25 hours on a boiling hot train, cattle class, sleeping across seats. I can usually sleep anywhere, but that wasn't pleasant.
  • After 11 months on the road, lost my wallet in Vegas on my final night. Or more accurately, misplaced it thanks to a large amount of free drinks from scantily-clad waitresses, who would keep you topped up as long as you were playing the casino's machines. Landed back in the UK, call of shame to the parents to pay for the bus ticket home.
No food poisoning or other toilet mishaps, thankfully!
