So, about 20 years ago I went on a Nile cruise. I was young and pretty naive back then. It was one of those classic Nile cruise boats, and honestly, there were multiple incidents that made the trip... memorable (sometimes for the wrong reasons).
Here are a few that still stick with me:
We had a really good tour guide who traveled with us everywhere and explained all the sites. One day we stopped at the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut. This time, instead of getting off the bus with us like he usually did, he stayed on and just described the temple from there. At the end, he casually dropped: “There was a terrorist attack here… my wife was killed, so I don’t visit anymore. But you’re more than welcome to go!”We were absolutely terrified. We literally ran around the temple and were back on the bus in about 10 minutes.
Another day, we were inside a different temple in one of the rooms when an Egyptian guy approached us and said, “You need to see this other room, come with me.” We started following him, but then I noticed he had a mini submachine gun hidden under his shirt. Probably innocent, but it definitely freaked us out.
We’d also paid for a hot air balloon ride and were given boxed food to take with us. The moment we got off the boat to head to the launch site, a group of kids (around 12 years old) ran up and stole all our food boxes right out of our hands.Other things: we were constantly ill from the food, and there was always someone filming us during the tour. We decided to buy the video at the end, but on the last day a waiter came up with a “special deal.” When we got home and watched it… it wasn’t even us on the tape.
All in all, it was a very memorable holiday — though often for the wrong reasons!
