Another good video from Tod's Workshop, related to the superb "arrow vs breastplate" testing.

No surprises, but a nicely done test. 160lbs war bow and 860lbs windlass crossbow. The archer can loose 6 aimed arrows before the crossbowman can load. Power is comparable, though the bow is better. But the crossbow requires far less strength and vastly less skill and can be used from cover. You could, for example, span the crossbow safely behind cover and shoot it through a small gap in a hide while crouching or even lying down. With a bow, you'd need to be standing out in the open to draw and loose. Given how common sieges were, that's a telling advantage. Someone described crossbows as the sniper rifles of the middle ages and I think that's spot on for one of the reasons they were used despite the clear advantages of a bow, in addition to the more obvious reason of training requirements. You could train someone to be an effective military crossbowman in weeks rather than the years needed for an archer.

I know that many people here like the Primitive Technology channel. I recently found a channel with some similarities and some differences that some of the same people will probably enjoy. Two people build stuff in the wild from scratch using only hand tools. The tools are modern, but are modern versions of extremely old tools rather than more recently designed tools. For example, they use a draw knife rather than a plane.

The playlist I've started to watch is building a Saxon house. There's over 5 hours of video in it. This is part 1 of 11.
