Z68 - BOOT SSD & CACHING

I have an OCZ Vertex Limited Edition 50gig enroute courtesy of ziipcarrot on the mm. Can't wait to give RST a try.

Just to recap, install drive, change to raid mode in bios an select teh appropriate setting in the intel rst screen.....simples.....is it?

Guys quick question. Installed the SSD into my existing build but when I set it to Raid in the bios it bluescreens on startup. As there anyway to enable Raid and use the ssd for caching without reinstalling windows?

I think but don't quote me that windows does need to be re installed. Thats what it says in my ISRT manual that came with my mobo.

I assume you enable AHCI for the Win 7 install on the SSD?

No, that won't work. If you want to boot and use ISRT on the same SSD you need to be running from RAID. ISRT simply won't work without it.

See points 2. and 8. of my instructions. It's best to begin with RAID and leave it in that mode.

This does mean that you forgo TRIM on your OS SSD partition, but modern SSDs should have some form of garbage collection.

Quite impressed with the performance of this, picked up a 64GB M4 and flashed it up. Bios and Intel drivers also needed updating before it would work properly, but now the entire SSD is caching a 2TB Green 5400RPM drive.

Don't know how that relates to real world usage, and it may kill the SSD fairly quickly but *shrugs* - the small ones are cheap.

hey gord , quite intersting topic - I just registered recently and I can't seem to pm you yet (not enough rights I believe)

I was wondering if you still have it up and running - and still happy with it

Or if there are some problems that came up with boot / cache partition

My new system will arrive soon and I would like to know :)

If you already have W7 installed on an SSD does using a cache drive too make any difference? Sure I read a review that concluded that the cache drive was only worth it if you had W7 installed on a mechanical drive.

I have heard that there is a way round installing SRT without having to reinstall windows. I recently installed an SSD for caching but unfortunatley had to reinstal windows with the Sata mode set to raid to get it to work.
I would have saved heaps of time if i just reinstalled windows to start with instead of wasting over a week trying to find a solution without the reinstall.

Just start from scratch, you wont be dissapionted as I now get very fast boot times which is comparable with an SSD system only, honestly guys this SRT is faaasssst applications load almost instantly and game loading times are massivly slashed, even shutting down is almost instant now.

CAUTION! not sure if there is any truth in it but I hear it's best to reinstall windows in the said Sata mode raid without the SSD connected, once the OS has been installed then connect the SSD.
It's all very simple from then on.
Spot my mistake though....I got a 128GB SSD but caching only supports 64gb max, not a problem for me though as I'm just gonna get a 64gb SSD and use the 128GB for storage lol.

Been using IRST for a while both at home and work and really like it, ive just sold my z68 Gene-z mobo as I want to get an itx setup but am currently using a msi h67 matx board, im now thinking i'll just use this with a small cube case and save some money as im not really bothered about overclocking anymore and as my i7 turbos to 3.8ghz its more than enough for me :) the only thing i really miss is the ssd caching, you can definately tell the difference.

Ive seen these silverstone devices http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=245&area=en which by the looks of things do the same thing, and at around £15 much cheaper than buying another z68 board.

Ive read one review and they seemed to like it just wondering if anyone has actually tried one or has any thoughts (the only downside I can see is that they are sata 3Gb/s and both my ssd and hdd are sata 6Gb/s so i wont see the full benefit like with IRST?
