ZEN SR7 Rumoured January 17th Release

EDIT: Not saying you Th0nt are wrong that for some people there is a stigma, tbc. I'm just lamenting the idea that someone would say to themselves "All the cool kids have i7-6990s. I want to be like them."

Yes I know pal. I bought an FX anyway when funds were tight and folk were preaching within this forum that they were poor. I use it for educational purposes, virtual machines, making screencasts, some ripping and light gaming so I knew what I was buying into at the time.

I teach ICT as my day job and have been fixing/building systems for nearly twenty years now. My general concensus for a while now is that the general public automatically assume AMD are inferior due to the shallow research they perform when selecting a computer and go off of a mates say so or a family member who is a computer 'expert'.

Advertising plays its part too. However even when you look in an enthusiast forum like here you instantly get the vibe of what you quoted and people get away with it.

You will find a select few that buy AMD anyway as they like to tinker or dont play those MMO type games that require raw dual cpu speed and can barely notice the difference between the two brands.

My FX-8320 setup was a lot more fun tinkering with than my current 4790k.

If moving to Zen means no big performance loss over what I currently have, I'll probably go for it.

Lot of if`s but`s and hope here, If they are going to under cut Intel Cpu`s on price then from past experience with AMD, Performance will not match up to the 8 core Intels.

... & Outperform Intel’s $999 i7 5960X

:D Well I would be careful of statements like this, but realistically if they are in the ball park to 'compete' then I would be happy enough to see what fits into a budget when its upgrade time in a few months.

It's a shame that there is some notion of stigma attached to buying a computer chip. I can try and imagine wanting to show off you have a high-end chip if you're pleased with it, but I can't get my head around being ashamed of having a regular medium or low-end chip. That aside from the fact that if you're gaming then you very rapidly hit diminishing returns in CPU price for the most popular games.

People have such short memories. Stigma follows performance and always has.

So the rumour is that the top SR7 (3.2GHz-3.5GHz) favourably competes with the i7 6900K and the I7 5960X and yet it will only cost £499 and yet the next step down the SR7 (3GHz-3.2GHz) is only going to cost $350.

6C12T for $250
4C8T for $150

So what is competing against what, because if the top one compare favourable to the Intel £1000 chips then we have to assume that the 4C8T $150 chip will be competing with the 6700 (ok we will be generous and say the non K) that is still a $290 chip according to that chart.

What are AMD trying to do, head for bankruptcy deliberately. I thought they wanted to no longer be known as the cheap alternative, not be here's our competing chips but they are half the price.

Yes I know we would all like for prices to be cheaper, but come on be sensible, you don't introduce a product that competes with the opposition at half the price. I mean If they are any good they will sell all they can make anyway, so why only charge $500 on the top model when you could charge $850, sell them all and still be cheaper

Estimates put Zen 8C/16T chips at around 200MM2,or around the size of a Polaris 10 GPU.

4C/8T chips will have half the die disabled. I would expect even at £150 for the cheapest chip it would be a decent margin.

However,I think more like £200 to £250 for the 4C/8T versions makes more sense, but what is filling the gap under £200 though??

I would be very surprised if they are only making one Zen die and using the 8C16T die for all models, with the appropriate parts disabled of course. I would think it more likely that they have at least two dies, one 8C16T and one 4C8T and then make all the necessary chip from those two.
