It's clear that apple has run out of ideas and are trying to strangle the competition is the only way it can claw it's way back (notice how they now release basicaly the same thing every 6 months..). It just can't justify it's prices when samsung are making better and less locked-down products for less.

They should never have been allowed to buy all those vague and generic patents. The EU should change the law to include this in fair trade laws tbh.

I really don't think Apple have "run out of ideas", they have a history of refining current ideas and making them user friendly and more appealing to people. I'm sure their designers aren't a load of clueless townsfolk :p

I'm not Apple's biggest fan, but in fairness they aren't the only company heavy handed with their patents. These days everyone seems to be defending their patents against everyone else.

1) Defending and using to attack are two different things.

2) What was the last high profile device to have an injunction after it was released?

From what I can see, it was never removed from shelves and the injunction, which only got as far as holding stock at customs, itself was removed within a week.

Let me be more specific, since we're talking about phones and tablets... have any of them had injunctions?

Hopefully it gets thrown out of court and the patent gets wiped. If that is the case then Apple will have to pay damages for lost sales to Samsung.

So this is what they are trying to suggest is "theirs"

And how about other manufacturers that have used that exact shape before...?

Now aside from this: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencet...tablet-looks-just-like-iPad-17-YEARS-OLD.html

Real devices I can think of that look like that before Apple displayed their tablet would include the Hanvon touchpad, displayed a few months before Apple even said they were releasing a tablet...

Any other (legitimate) suggestions for tablets that "look like" iPads that were released beforehand?

EDIT: And then of course we have the MSI tablet http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/msi-shows-off-10-inch-android-tablet-running-new-tegra-chipset/

And the Lenovo Lepad http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/lenovo-ideapad-u1-hybrid-hands-on-and-impressions/
20100105uihybrid24.jpg

And one by IDC http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/icds-tegra-tablet-officially-dubbed-the-vega-headed-to-t-mobil/

And another http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/07/aluratek-tempts-with-8-9-inch-720p-cinepal-pmp/

And another... http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/paradigm-shift-joins-the-tablet-crowd-with-android-based-emt-10a/

Then obviously we have the HP slate http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/the-hp-slate/

Anyone getting the picture here...?

Yep, all displayed (most as working devices and some with Android) in January 2010, several weeks before the Apple launch of their iPad "first"...;)

EDIT 2: Looking at those pictures together it just shows how unoriginal everyone has been in the design of their tablets... All produced and shown for the first time yet they all come up with the same design...

Hello Apple? Yeah, Hi, it's 1994 here, we want our design back.

Have you seen the Sienfeld episode with the shrimp joke?

Anyway, that's poor since 1994 can't make a call. :p

Back on subject. This will be overturned easily, and really needs to be heard in one of the proper european courts, not a single country court.

Indeed, there is no way any of this is going to stand. As I've said before Apple are just being aggressive and taking advantage of legal loopholes. Those holes will get plugged before long.

You don't understand what is going on. Apple take an existing design concept for a product, then they do the following:

1) make it very dear,
2) stick an "i" on the front and
3) claim it's original.

Samsung have sneakily been reverse engineering their work, creating the Original I Dear.

I like all gadgets.

I don't think there is anyway someone could say with a straight face that the iPhone is any less useful at being a phone than say a Nokia, BlackBerry or any other Android phone. Arguably the only thing it is less useful at is the fringe features such as HDMI out and DLNA etc.

I think people need to stop bashing things as x vs y when in fact both x and y are very good at what they do. Things being different doesn't necessarily make them bad :p
