I should have said, I have an M2 Air already.

Prior to that I had a Surface Pro 3 from 2014!

Based on a new chip coming every 18 months, it will probably be M8 by the time I’m looking to upgrade again.

So I guess now is not the right time to pick one of these [M2 MacBook Air] up. Chances that M3 MacBook Air will be coming in two months at WWDC?

If you wait until then, there will be the argument of waiting for the M4 chips (or whatever they might be called). Then it’ll be a case of waiting for the next chip and then the next. Might depend on if you need the extra performance or not….if you do, maybe wait but otherwise, the M2 should work for most people.

I just don't see it, has not been out a year yet, M1 was on the market for nearly 20 months.

The Studio is still M1.

The speculation is a 15/16" Air but not M3.

M1 was based on A14 uarch, M2 based on A15 uarch, and they've already released the A16 uarch with the latest iPhones. If they ever want to release a Mac chip based on A16, it's now.

I agree it's more likely that they'll just skip A16 and M3 will be based on A17 uarch and will come at the end of this year or early next year.

The 15" MacBook Air will be still based on the M2 if they announce it at WWDC as it's to early for the M3, plus a cheeky £200 hike for the privilege of a couple more inches on the base 8/256GB config.
The M3 version your probably looking at early Summer next year.
