I had a look at the white one in one of the stores today and had a play and I have to say that I am impressed.... but I want it in black :D
 
Save the hassle of installing ubuntu and use the onbaord Xzandros which comes shipped with the eee pc. Simply follows these instructions
Make sure your connected to the internet

1. Go to console (CNTL-ALT-T).
2. Type:
3. sudo bash
4. apt-get update
5. apt-get install ksmserver
6. apt-get install kicker
7. Reboot (should go to Easy Mode)
8. Go to Settings → Personalization
9. Select “Full Desktop Mode” under Login Mode
10. Reboot.

you can install apps with synaptic packet manager. If your a noob to linux I would advise using this rather that the apt-get tool in console.
 
My brothers just picked one of these, great except for the dead pixal slightly over to the left of screen, 7" screen kinda makes it 'in your face' noticable :(
 
How does this thing cope with being put to sleep? With my Mac I can close the lid and when I re-open it it will come back on instantly and can stay asleep for a couple of days. With most Windows laptops they tend to go a bit nuts when you do that.

it doesn't hibernate well... from reports the battery rarely lasts more than 24 hours max in hibernation mode - often as little as 8 hours and it doesn't come out of hibernation reliably either - often BSOD when you do.
 
I have been waiting for these, drooling, ever since I heard about them. I REALLY want one of these, if it'll play videos - would be so so so much use to me, it seems they do. and seeing that USB mod makes me want one more.. two BIG USB pen drives and a large memory stick in the card reader anyone? :D

Hopefully by the time i have the money, the 8g one will be available. But i shall be buying one of these. at that size they are almost pocketable.. and no more worries about drop death.. :D

man, the mods people are doing to these things.. overclocks, internal USB hubs, 2x internal pen drives, 3g modems, bluetooth.. at the moment i think not, but.. once all is good with work, the sky seems to be the limit with these minipcs... Me i still have the "scared to kill a computer with mods" because of soldering direct to the board. £230 is a hell of a lot of money to me while i'm off work on SSP but once I go back... well i'd still be very upset if i killed it but it wouldn't be the disaster it would be at the moment.

EDIT: I've got a small case i could put it in, which'd still fit inside like a hoodie pocket or in a small backpack that'd let me take a caddy with a 2.5" drive too..

I've got a 14" widescreen Samsung R20 C2D lappy which is too cumbersome for most of my needs, but perfect for others. this EEE will bridge the gap perfectly

Has any Eee owner, who has also installed XP onto their Eee, tried a usb digital tv stick? I assume there's no reason wny it shouldn't work ok?

Strikes me as being quite a useful portable tv device (as well as its other assets).

Could someone who owns one please post some photos taken directly overhead of the unit. If I am considering something that small I often print out a mockup and see if the size of the keys or the screen or whatever are convenient. It's the best you can do if you cannot actually see or touch the unit. That is unless somone lives close to St Albans or works in Central London?
 
If you don't mind going into central London at least one shop in Tottenham Court road has a demo unit setup that you can play with.
 
Famous toy store, the one that's open untill 10pm in most places, you know - the one claiming Playthings Are Them - have demo units on display as well. What's more - although they have no tickets for them printed yet, 90% of stores have white pearlescent units in stock, for £218. Just ask attending salesman to hand write you a ticket. I did yesterday and my local branch had at least 39 of them left.

I'm looking for a large, dark stick on protector, the pealescent white casing looks kind of girly. I was using it on the train this morning and old lady seating opposite looked at me like I robbed hello kitten backpack of some child - big, fat, bearded bloke digging away with brute fingers on a tiny, delicate perlescent pencil box...

Haha, I ordered one of these and put in the wrong post code for my delivery address, it's going to be interesting to find out where it ends up, home or uni or dumped at city links depo. :p

Did you say it comes with a pouch?
 
I'm waiting for mine :/ ordered Thursday ... hope it will be here before Xmas.

In the meantime, I've compiled a quick guide HowTo install Windows XP from the network.
You just need to boot from the Network (the EEE knows how to do that, yes ?)
If you don't have an external CD drive, it may be simpler than trying to get a USB key bootable :

Went and tried one out today..its a lovely bit of kid, found it for £209, but not sure if im gonna get it yet - that was in white!

The keyboard is teeeny!

Great piece of kit though, so light and looks so nice.
 
Anyone know when these things will be back in stock? Also, am I missing something? Why are the white EEEs more expensive than the black EEEs?
