***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Hmmm. I'm getting fed up of waiting for this thing.

I paid for it on the 7th, the money has gone out of my account, yet the product still hasn't shipped.

Anyone know how long I have until I can no longer claim my money back if OCUK don't deliver? :(
Surely you can claim your money back at any time before they've actually dispatched it. I feel your pain - ordered mine on the 4th:
Thank you for your webnote. Unfortunately we currently do not have a date of when thsi product will be available at the present time.
:(

If they've not sent anything out you're well within your rights to cancel the order and not be charged anything. They wont even be able to charge a re-stocking fee as there's nothing to restock!

Ive emailed a few times, also to the place I got it from aswell.

Both say it will void warrenty.

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Dear Friend :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Brian and I would be assisting you today. Since the product positioning and service terms of Eee PC is different from notebooks, Asus is unable to provide any upgrade for the internal hardware (including the SSD and memory modules).

Customers disassembling the outer cases (including the keyboard) of Eee PC products or tearing off the warranty label is considered as customer induced destruction (CID), which will lead to voiding the warranty.

If you have demands for higher capacity of memor! y and storage, you may select various models of notebooks from Asus for your suitable purchase.
End Quote.

The last sentence REALLY annoys me.

Thanks for the response, I agree that really sucks! Why oh why do they have a user serviceable door that is not user serviceable? I think they are just giving us a line. I think it may be time for ye ol' hairdryer trick to get the label of temporarily. There must be a law against this for the UK, just needs a good lawyer to find it and tell Asus off.

Thanks once again, much appreciated

Just ordered a Black one for £236 inc. next day delivery.
Should have it by 1 tommoz! Can't believe i found a black one at a decent price before i go home for Christmas!

Time to sell the DS to recoup some of the money. I am such a sucker for gadgets!! Oh well, i am justifying the purchase because it plays media better and i can play some FPSs on the plane.... oh yeah and for ermmm Uni work or something.

does anyone know if OcUK will be getting the EEE 8g model anytime? i'm waiting for this to become available. OcUK, also, if asus release the long runtime battery, please please please also stock this. many thanks.

oh and by the way, Asus EEE rocks. I've been looking at page after page of modifications and stuff.. :o i want one :D

Yeh, my eye's are on the 8G too, in black, OcUK should definetly get these in, I for one am waiting for them. Should be around £300 I think, I have heard that they should be in the UK around Q1 2008. Can you post a link for info on this battery you talk of? Any idea of costs?

Thanks!

You know the odd thing about this? I got an email from the same guy after an angry response from me. He basically said:

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif] My name is Brian and I would be assisting you today. I am sorry, the upgrade limitation has been cancelled in the USA. However, the issue in other areas isn’t decided at present.Sorry for any inconvenience.

And, I also recieved a random text this morning:

"asus have released a statement saying its ok to remove the warrenty sticker. For normal upgrades. So get goin. And dont tell me thats old news. It probably is"

Im very confused now.

Just go for it, install the ram yourself.

I'd put money on that they wouldn't refuse a repair if you had upgraded the ram.

I'm sure that another company had tried to put this as terms in their warranty, but I can't remember which, nor can I be bothered to google it when I'm so busy.

I'm pretty sure they got ordered to accept repairs to laptops with upgraded memory because the EU said it was unfair to charge an excessive amount for 'the model up' to have upgraded ram and that they were using the warranty as a way force consumers into buying the upgraded model.

I'm sure if someone looked for it, they would find it. Anyways, back to work.

im not too fussed, when I have some money ill be soldering the nuts off it i think :) internal usb drives are quite tempting ;) and I want an underlit keyboard :)

Just annoying for people who just want to upgrade ram. Its not fair half the world get one law and another get a complete opposite.

You don't need to solder to fit an internal USB drive anymore! Someone did it by installing extra usb sockets via the spare PCI-E socket - all internal of course. :D

there isn't a lot of info on the battery, just that it will be released sometime in 2008 and will be a six cell version of the std battery, giving approx. 50% more runtime. It has been a rumour but over on eeeuser.com there is a topic saying it will be released, along with other acessories.

For people wishing to mod eee's, GO FOR IT. after the first 100hrs if it's trouble free it'll likely be trouble free for a good while. The sky is the limit with this little thing, there's enough space for a 4 port passive USB hub, and then its up to you what other devices you fit. The underlit keyboard is a mod that's causing people a lot of problems deciding how to do it, and it's definitely one for the white EEE - keyboard space is REALLY tight in there but someone seems to have been able to do it with UV LEDs on a white EEE. Not my cup of tea that one - would be somewhat worried about UV damaging my eyes but it looks well cool.

There's even people putting 1.8" hard drives out of ipods in the 4g EEE - not sure this'll fit in the 8g as it uses its miniPCI-E socket for the SSD rather than chips soldered to the mainboard - this is why I am wanting one.

the ram/warranty issue is somewhat of an embuggerance, but i think asus will find it's illegal for them to limit the warranty so here as it is in the rest of the civilised world. It'll probably be ok in a few weeks - but if you're that worried, wait.

I can;t wait to get mine. Still on order, hopefully I'll get it before the end of next week or I'll have to wait till the new year for delivery. :(

Got a link mate? I thought still had to solder onto the pci slot (mines a 7b rev so probably wont have the connector but will have the circuit?)

The less soldering the better though! a nice hub and some flash drives will be a lovely addition to my eee ;)

I'm defo going to go ahead and mod it now, its been on the past 3/4 days straight, gets hot but sufficiently cools its self and carries on going like a trooper :D

Sorry I misread the article. Here's the thread that the article was linking to. Basically they've installed USB connectors via the mini PCI-E socket so you can change the USB drives etc at will (just yank them out the USB socket), but you still need to do some soldering to get the USB sockets up and running.
