***The Official Asus Eee PC Thread***

Anyone know when these things will be back in stock? Also, am I missing something? Why are the white EEEs more expensive than the black EEEs?

Because they had some white ones in stock a few days ago, they pushed the price up. Don't worry, when they get some black ones in stock they will also go up in price :)

But of course I hope not, because if they put it back down to £219 inc vat I might buy one... Another problem is that I am not sure about the keys. I want to be able to go into a coffee shop and do some work on my screen play. I am just worried about getting frustrated by the keys being too small (And a bit wobbly). Maybe I am better off going for a 12" laptop...

I couldnt type first time i tried today, after a bit it was fine.

Did you say it comes with a pouch?

yes a little black pouch, i use mine every day its great for carrying around with you and just whipping out hoping online whereever and whenever you can.

typing on it is ok once you adjust to the small keys, maybe not as quick as my full size keyboard but fast enough for browsing I mean its not ideal to be typing up 1000s of word essays and the like.

ohn and i have just installed open arena onto mine :) from the xandros repos so i got a cool little fps to play when i'm at work.

standard os with wifi on 3/4 brightness around 3-4 hrs surfings net

How you finding the Linux?

If i was to get one, it'd be the first time properly using it. It will be used at college, for Word etc - will that be fine? Apparantly it has a Windows thing allowing this doesnt it?

I have just seen that Asus have officially released a warranty update which tells us that removing the RAM cover and breaking that "WARRANTY VOID" seal will not void the warranty at all. i.e Upgrading to a 1GB so-dimm module will not void it's warranty:

Here is a quote from http://usa.asus.com (If you read the whole thing by clicking here you will see that this would apply to the UK also):

ASUS Computer International (“ASUS”) recently received feedback from one of its valued customers with questions concerning the purpose of a seal stating, “Warranty Void If Removed” over the access door to the single SODIMM slot on some models of the ASUS Eee PC. ASUS wishes to assure its customers that merely breaking or removing this kind of seal will not void the ASUS Limited Warranty. Although ASUS recommends that customers use ASUS-approved service facilities and components, ASUS is committed to honoring the terms of its Limited Warranty and making sure that its customers are free to make appropriate hardware and software modifications and upgrades, regardless of whether the service is performed by an approved facility, a non-approved service provider, or by the customers themselves. ASUS will replace the warranty label with a label to warn users that ASUS will not be responsible for the damage caused by improper hardware change.

I hope this brings good news to some...

I knew this would happen anyway. They may be able to get away with it in the US, but here, upgrading ram can not be used as a condition to void the warranty, I'm sure other companies have tried that before.

if i was you give it a week of using the default mode and i bet you will find it does all you need.

UK warrenty is still shafted by that sticker though. This applies only to USA and Canada atm.

How do you know this? Just curious as I cannot see it in the Press Release, thanks.

EDIT: I see, for the original site I quoted the info from (an edited update I have not seen till now). As fadumpt said in a comment on that site it may be a good idea to email and ask about the UK status with this issue. Maybe some sort of mass email from us all to bring it to their attention?

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Dear Friend :
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is Brian and I would be assisting you today. Since the product positioning and service terms of Eee PC is different from notebooks, Asus is unable to provide any upgrade for the internal hardware (including the SSD and memory modules).

Customers disassembling the outer cases (including the keyboard) of Eee PC products or tearing off the warranty label is considered as customer induced destruction (CID), which will lead to voiding the warranty.

If you have demands for higher capacity of memor! y and storage, you may select various models of notebooks from Asus for your suitable purchase.
End Quote.

The last sentence REALLY annoys me.

Hmmm. I'm getting fed up of waiting for this thing.

I paid for it on the 7th, the money has gone out of my account, yet the product still hasn't shipped.

Anyone know how long I have until I can no longer claim my money back if OCUK don't deliver? :(
