Just been thinking, i suppose it differs from different people, but how long since the first fag does it take for people to get addicted to smoking? Any smokers on here that can say how long it took them? Just something im curious about.

I have had the odd one and never felt the draw.

I do not want to test this further though.

I reckon it's depends on your body how long it takes.

contrary to what people say here about the body, nicotine addiction is completely mental.

and to your question, it be really hard to get a answer because everyone who is starting out smoking believes they are not addicted and the seasoned addicts cant think back that far.

each person will be different, and each person will have a anecdote tale to tell which describes the point they sort of knew they was a addict. " my first cigarette smoked alone" or " when i had to turn the house upside down looking for a fag end ".

personally i believe your addicted on the 2nd cigarette , why else would you smoke it knowing how bad the first one was? its because through peer pressure and conditioning you make yourself want it. this is the first sign of addiction, addicted to the method , addicted to the way it makes you look, addicted to the stigma and in time addicted to the nicotine.

it isn't one day your a non addict and the next bang, your a addict. its a smooth transition .

Not true, while there is a mental aspect to it, nicotine has a biological addiction to it as well (and many medical journals will back this up - http://www.trdrp.org/research/PageGrant.asp?grant_id=383)
I however agree with you about the smooth transition aspect though, also due to individual differences it is impossible to quantify a time period for a person to become addicted, their are too many variables.

your right of course being a ex smoker myself i was wrong to say it has no physical affect, what i should have said is , the mental addiction is what's the most difficult to quit.

The most important addiction out of the 2 is the addiction of the mind, since each and every individual has a different mind also they have a different addiction, and this is why everyone has there own unique battle against nicotine addiction.

Like said before, I always thought I was never addicted and done it because I liked it.

Thought different when I tried to stop the second time, although done it quite easily the first time for 4month.

I smoked when i was 14-16, not heavily, never got hooked, was more of a social peer pressure thing.

Was definitely a social thing for me, glad i don't smoke.

My sister use to smoke up to 10 a day, but she wasn't hooked. She went weeks without smoking, then one day she'll light one up. She smoked because she liked to, not because she was addicted. My mum is the same, she can give up in an instant, but chooses not to.

I smoked for about a year, then decided it was costing me too much money, so I quit. Was a little edgy for a few weeks, and I ate everything in sight, but it wasn't that hard. 1 year might not sound a lot, but on average I hit 30 a day.
