In your opinion, what was the greatest console of all time?

I think the spectrum in particular has been way over looked, I mean who hasn't played games like Jet Set Willy, JetMan, Pang, Operation Wolf, Chase HQ, Rainbow Islands, R-Type, Manic Miner, Elite, Lotus Turbo Esprit Challenge, the 'Dizzy' games, the list just goes on and on, my first instincts when seeing the thread title was to choose the Dreamcast and although I love it to bits I'm really not sure it deserves the console crown considering the all the brilliant innovative hardware and games that came before it.

The Spectrum isn't a console, it's a home computer. the same goes for the Amiga, ST and any other computers people are mentioning.

Playstation - got me into gaming and have so many good memories of tekken and ff7 until it got stolen along with our 13 games :( ... used the insurance to buy a ps2 the moment it came out though so that almost made up for it. SSX!!!

Love that 360 dont you? The pure fact its suffered from the issues you have mentioned (i dont care if they are fixed now) means i couldnt put one in my list. Every 360 ive used seems to have crashed (not 3rod) maybe im a curse lol

I don't love the Xbox360 as a console any more than my PS3, in fact, console wise I think the PS3 is superior, I do however love the games and services the Xbox360 does offer.

what console would you consider the greatest console of all time?

i have owned/still own, most consoles.
but based on time i've spent on it + amount of games i have bought.... the 360 is easily the best console I've ever owned.

my second choice would be the Megadrive with the rest coming in a distant 3rd.

the most disappointing consoles I've ever owned are the Wii (5 games) and PS3 (4 games) due to the lack of games i want for them (yes, they have plenty games, just not the ones i want to play as yet).

Why are computers like the Spectrum and Amiga being listed? They're computers NOT consoles and using them to play games only does not make them consoles or we may as well include PC's as some folk i know only use PC's for gaming. Get with the program people!

ok ok leave all your toys in the pram lol, what if you owned an Amiga with only the Altered beast and T2 GAMES CARTRIDGE that plugged in the back, hybrid games console ?;):p.

And as I said. It's not primarily a console.
I know a lot more than you think.

Here's one for a start:

Another:

Hell, take this quote:

I also pointed out the fact you named it as a console, which it wasn't. It was a media device. You could have named the Playstation, but like most people, made the common error of calling it the PSX.

Haha! Just goes to show how insignificant your life must be in order to post something as pedantic as that! PSX plays Playstation games, full stop & all ready explained its background, if it really makes you feel better Ill edit my post so you dont have to read through wikipedia again! & doesnt that mean the 360 is a media device? Probably not because most of them dont work.:p

Gaming in general: Playstation for how much it changed everything.

For me: Dreamcast due to how much potential was there and purely for how addicted I was to Crazy Taxi and Chu Chu Rocket.

My life is 'insignificant', what puts you in a position to say something like that? That's not very nice at all and quite offensive.
I was merely pointing out a common misconception in that the PSX wasn't actually a games console, it was produced outside of Sony's Entertainment Division and was primarily a media device.

Just because I have a knowledge on the subject doesn't make me insignificant. I don't insult people who know more than I do about TV's, the Environment or Quantum Physics.

& doesnt that mean the 360 is a media device? Probably not because most of them dont work.:p
Grow up.

I didnt mean for it too be offensive but your post did seem a little bit of an attack as it was such a minor thing to attempt to argue about, ive edited my post anyway.

& telling me to grow up is offensive, my mother says that.:(

Yeah was amazing at the time, unfortunately it hasn't aged that well :(

32" LCD with Goldeneye on an N64, through RF is painful to my eyes

Exactly. Thats why you really had to be there to be able to judge how great a console was. I remember Super Mario World totally making my jaw drop when i was a kid. It was the best thing since sliced bread yet i can barely play five minutes of the game now.

PSX is what the original Playstation was sometimes referred to in magazines before it was launched.
dunno.gif

SNES and N64 are my favourite consoles ever though. Almost everything that you take for granted today seems to be derived from one or other of Nintendo's consoles. :o

Not to mention those two have some of the greatest games of all time on them. I think because of the way thsy 2D graphics work, the SNES has aged a lot better than the original Playstation, Saturn and N64 - despite all three having superb games, the incredibly murky graphics can be hard to go back to and appreciate once again. Compared to the likes of Super Mario World, Zelda III, Secret of Mana which are bright, clear, colourful, and the gameplay timeless. :)

Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon) is another superb game for SNES that I only actually discovered recently.
