ONM - MarioKart Wii Review

I'm enjoying the game so far, but it does seem a bit too item orientated.

Playing online, it seems that there's no point in trying to get in the lead early in the race on open courses as you just get decimated by items.

Really enjoying it so far... well the hour I played last night!

I went to pick it up from my local Asda last night with a mate at 12:01. I was surprised there was quite a few people doing the same thing. There must have been 6 of us. Asda £32.99 by the way :)

Love how easy it is to find a game online and even playing with your friends.

Agreed, you can be miles in the lead only to find someones released a red shell which is catching you up.

Anyone know how you get a decent start?

got in town at 8.30 the store opened at 8.45 but is only selling to pre-order people till 9.15 then if any are left I can pick it up

Surely they have pre-order and stock copies?

Where have you been for the last 2 decades :D

I can talk, MKDS was my first Mario Kart. :D

As for the start, hold accelerate just after the "2" appears on the screen. Once you have done it once, you will learn where the sweet spot is and adjust accordingly.

Enjoy!

I hoping my lovely fiancee (who reads these forums... :p) lets me have it a bit earlier. If you're reading, sweetie, I love you lots and lots. And it'll get me off Pro Evo for a bit! (Probably). :o

haha! :D

With Mario Kart Double Dash I used to keep on tapping the accelerate button. Cheers mate ;)

Loving the retro tracks.

Out of interest who is playing with the wii wheel ? I see online that oddly quite a few people are, they arent even doing that badly either.

What does the golden wheel mean ? Also finally how come I got a reward for 50 online wins when there's no way I won online games 50 times. Does it count any positive score as a win ?

Any controller can be displayed in Gold. This means that it is the prefered controller. If you used the classic controller all of the time, then this will then be displayed in gold. **IIRC

I started off playing with the wheel last night. Seems pretty good. Although not sure If I will use it all of the time.

I quite like the wheel. Played it with the classic also and thats fine.

Biggest impact on the controls is drift/cornering method. If you set it to automatic, the cars steer more sharply. In fairness, this makes the game extremely easy to pick up for newcomers. The missus plays this way.

Me, being a man with an ego, I set it to manual, and promptly got my butt kicked, by the missus. Much to her enjoyment.

If you set it to manual, you have to hop/drift around some of the corners when going at speed as you simply cannot turn sharp enough. Takes a little bit of getting used to, but enables some beautiful drifting. Once I figured it out, I got my revenge..... and was sent to the spare room for gloating :D:D

Blue/Red shells are still slightly annoying, but its how the game is. Even if you are last, you know the boxes will have mushrooms/magic stars to help you along. No matter how many times you are hit, you never feel like the race is lost. Part of the reason for its success I suppose.

Btw, I have managed to avoid a couple of red shells, by firing a weapon backwards just before it hits me. Probably more luck than judgement.

so is it finally worth setting my wii up for online play.cant wait to have a blast at this .got original snes and mario cart at side of me.hope this is good.

Once we have all settled into the game, we should try and organise the OcUK Mario Kart Grand Prix.

That sounds like a plan. I saw the event stuff on the channel last night but didn't look into it. I suppose you can organize your own events with your friends list?

If you have a green shell, a red shell or a banana just hold in the button for fire weapon and the item will trail behind you. This will act as a shield against incoming shells. No need to fire it backwards it will work everytime.

Mario kart is brilliant because it holds the old adage easy to pick up hard to master.

Worryingly I haven't been out to get this yet and now I want it I'm checking local reserve and collect places and they are out of stock. Think I might of missed out due to my procrastination. :(

Its a joke, every online site has it out of stock. The only place is for auctions and its £45+
