If you don't feel safe on/in your vehicle, either you need to choose another type of vehicle or become a pedestrian but don't take your vehicle onto the footpath!

I doubt very much that you did not know that it was against the law and that like many of your fellow cyclists, decided that the law does not apply to you.

I didn't know. I haven't rode a bike since I was about 5 years old. I'm only riding one because I haven't passed my test just yet. Be riding to work for a while now. Ride down at 5am on the roads because they are empty and it's quicker and safer. Ride back on the pavement because they are empty and safer (for me).

I don't some how think I'm above the law. However I do think it's stupid that he was not at least sympathetic enough to say. "Look I know its dangerous but continue your journey on the road and carry on from now on" Then he would have got the exact same result; I'll now ride on the roads and I'll stop terrorizing society with my anti social behaviour and drug taking. Oh wait. =/

No wounder there are so many little ****s about these days. How are we expected to respect the police when (From what I've seen so far) a lot of them are so far up their own behind they think they are the bloomin' law.

I have been riding on the pavements for over 10 years and I am not about too stop!
NO WAY am I going to risk my life riding on the roads when 95% of the time their is a perfectly good and safe pavement to use which has ZERO people on it.

I am considerate however and when I do come across pedestrians on the pavement I slow down to almost a stop when I pass them.
In over 10 years of riding on the pavement I have NEVER hit anyone however for the very small amount of time I actually rode on the road I have been hit twice by idiotic drivers.
Luckily both times I was not seriously hurt but personally I think that had a lot to do with the fact I am very agile and use to be pretty competent at gymnastics when I was younger. Both accidents were serious enough to write off the front wheel both times :(

Breaking the speed limit puts peoples lives at risk the same CANNOT really be said for riding on the pavement!!

Try commuting on Gloucester road and I'm sure you would be a crusader as well. The amount of times I have almost killed cyclists because they have gone through a red light, isn't worth thinking about. Yet I bet I as a motorist would get blamed.

I also hate busses and lorrys and people who park in stupid places be it legal or illegal.

But my biggest problem is with the council for there inability to make efficient and safe road networks. it's not a hard job.
 
Helmet + High Vis vest + Road and Spatial awareness makes most roads fairly safe to ride on as long as you are aware of what is around you and predict that car drivers may do the unexpected.

Unless the road is real dangerous (and there is normally a cycle path or alternative route) there is no need to be on the pavement unless it is a dual purpose one.

However the copper was an arse and should have just pointed out that you should be on the road. Guess his wife hadn't been polishing his helmet and he was in a bad mood.

Oh and motorised road users should be aware of cyclists as well we have a right to the road. More than they do.
 
Well all I can say is that now you /do/ know you shouldn't be riding on the pavement on your bike.

You just had to pay £30 for the lesson it seems :p

If that is a joke it isn't even remotely funny.

If you are serious then it is ABH or GBH + Criminal Damage at the least. At the worse it could be manslaughter.

Sure the cyclist should be on the road but ti could be a dual purpose pavement (and these are not always clearly marked) or they could just be avoiding a real dangerous stretch of road.

What give you the right to attack them?

That post was either a real misplaced attempt at humour or you're a real tit.

How do cyclists have more rights to the road? it is the other way round! Maybe if a car drove on the pavement a copper should have just told him to drive on the road instead of fining him? :rolleyes:

So what about a young child riding their bike? Should they be made to go on the road too? Bloody stupid if you ask me due to the fact that it's safer to ride on the pavement in a safe manner.

Luckily i don't have that problem with my motorbike!:D

Cyclists and Horses (as well as pedestrians) have a right to use the roads. cars do it by license.

I walk on the pavement and don’t expect to be hit by a cyclist, game set and match. Cycle on the road, that is where you belong, if it is too dangerous for you then bad luck! :p

Like I said, my issue isn't with the law its with the a) lack of a cycle lane and b) Tool of a police officer! :o

A policeman told me off for this when I was younger - he just said "you're not allowed to cycle on the pavement" so I got off and walked - there was no fine. Hitting everyone with fines for minor things seems a bit ott. Maybe if you are zooming down a packed high street a fine is justified. But you should be confident enough to cycle on the road.

Please read my above post and you will see I agree that cyclists should, if possible, ride on the road. There are circumstances where this is simply too dangerous and so the pavement must be used. A courteous cyclist can do this (I do it from time to time and stop if pedestrians need to get past safely) and then rejoin the road when it is safe to do so.

Also a lot of dual use pavements don't have adequate signage so how can you know they don't have a right to the pavement?

Seriously advocating (or even doing) acts of violence and criminal damage against a cyclist just because they are on the pavement (and may have a right to do so) leaves me speechless.

You're are an idiot (:p). If you read above you will find that I state that it is possible to cycle on the road and be safe and only recommend going on the pavement when allowed to do so and when it is too dangerous to be on the road.

I give more respect to vehicles than I seem to get back though... :(
