Age of Conan

Cool, give me a shout I'm on there too, though I don't think I'll be on anymore tonight. My main's called Corn, lvl 39 now, barbarian. Thinking of making an alt, can't decide between Tempest or Shaman.

There's no doubt that Age of Conan looks like an amazing game, just ordered myself a copy, can't wait to play it :)

So is AoC any good for a cashual player? say 2 odd hours a day maybe less?

what sort of a system is needed ? looks heavy on gfx

Well on my system (in sig) im playing at 1680x1050 4x AA, about 85% settings on high and slider options on various levels! Also it seems pretty friendly to the casual player although i cant say atm for end game!

Sadly, the end-game high-end PvP probably won't be accessible to casual players. It'll probably take a fair amount of grinding just to be eligible to compete for a battlekeep (lots of PvE farming to get enough resources for a tier 3 guild city, and then a lot of PvP either in minigames or open world to keep the guild's pvp ranking high enough to be eligible to compete). Then once you've actually got one, I assume your guild will expect you to be there to defend it whenever its vulnerability window comes up. THough it's only 48v48 in sieges atm and there's a lot of guilds with 200+ members, so I guess there's some redundancy. And smaller guilds can still compete for watchtowers in the BKs, you don't NEED to grind for a guild city if you don't want to.

Gah, server is down for 5 hours... might aswell go to bed. :/

Had only just got off that first island, ready to explorer the new land when the server shutdown.

Great game though, my first mmo experience.. and I loved Oblivion so this is perfect. :)

A lot of people were complaing about their framerates with X19xx cards. The game isn't optimised for them, and even less so for Xfire or SLI - people have reported only marginal games with 2-card setups. Still, it's a fast card and no doubt they'll slowly tweak a lot more performance out of the game, and your CPU is fast as well, so I don't think it's worth upgrading if you're ok with running the game on medium settings. What might be worthwhile is another 2GB of RAM, this game needs 2.1GB on its own I believe (total though, not just unpaged, so it should run on yours but would thrash the drive a bit, and 2.1GB is the maximum, it's not always usign that much).

I'm on Aquilonia as well, Zordrak lvl 34 Guardian. In a clan called Stench of Death if anyone wants an invite and isn't worried about having to roleplay :)

I got out of tortage with my ranger last night and when i got into the city AOC crashed twice due to lack of memory:eek:had to set it to medium :(

I completely agree.

One of my main dislikes of the game in addition to the lack of polish (and the fact its just dam boring) is the instanced zones. There is no need for them and it utterly ruins the feeling of immersion. If they are going to instance zones like Guild Wars, they should at least adopt Guild Wars' no subsciption fee policy which was their justification for the zone instancing.

Instance dungeons, ala WoW, are one thing - Having 12 instanced of each zone on the same server is entirely different. For a supposed 'next gen' mmorpg, its sure as hell taken a few steps backwards.

I disagree, considering the graphics of this game instancing was a great choice as not everyone can afford a £2000 rig. I mean I think most peoples PCs would struggle to manage hundreds of people in the same area with settings on anything other than Low.

And also can you imagine what it would be like if 20 odd people were trying to get to a quest NPC, or vendor taking into account the collision mechanics of this game, ouch!

ON that note actually, i'm running a E24XX at 3ghz, with 2gb Ram and an 8800GT. On High, i get terrible screen tear. Is this to be expected? Running on Medium clears things up. I hadn't realised it was that intensive.

Ive reinstalled and given it another go. unsure how long it will stick.

Collision mechanics, so annoying in this game when some dude stands in a doorway and you can't get through because u can't walk through players as in other MMORPGS. Irritates the hell out of me when ppl zone and just stand there and go make a cup of coffee or whatever.

As for the game itself, very much enjoying atm, better than EQ2, better than LOTRO.

Let's hope FC pull their fingers out and get a little more content in for all those 80s, u know the divvies that raced to the endgame and are now complaining there's nothing to do LOL after 2 weeks.:D

Of course there are a few niggling things, but I think it will be really useful in high end PvE and great fun in PvP.

Yeah, this whole thing on 'Instancing' is a bit strange. I personally don't mind it at all, my understanding is that it is done for performance reasons which is fair enough. Many other games have done it and they worked ok (EQII, Tabula Rasa and probably many others). It is still different to Guildwars, in Guildwars it is only the towns that are MMO, once you leave the town your instantly in your own instance and don't see anyone else. At least with games like Conan you still see plenty of other people.

I also read an interesting post on the official forums that even those games that appear to be be seamless, are usually relying on fancy tricks and work arounds to cut the world into 'chunks', 'Zones', 'instances' or whatever you want to call it, but it is just a bit less obvious.

Besides, you can always change instances to be with friends, guild mates etc. And to be honest, if they only had one instance of the White Sands on the RP-PVP server I'm on, it would be a bloodbath and just full of stealthed people spawn camping the rez points, I'm glad you can move to a different instance if someone is really bothering you.

I have spent many hours playing since release and my opinion of it has changed a bit. I am enjoying the game as it does have allot going for it in terms of style, graphics and combat. I am playing it more like a single player game and to be honest I don't think I will be carrying on long after I have reached max level.

The thing is that it does not really feel that massively multiplayer and more like Guild Wars with added extras. This may be due to it being heavily instanced and too simplistic for the old faithful dedicated long-term MMORPG players. These are the core players that any MMORPG needs to pay that £10 for years on end. These are the players that may not admit it, but have a need for grind and complexity.

I am sceptical that there is going to be enough new regular content and features introduced to warrant the £10 a month. It is early days so I may be completely wrong on this one. I do predict that in the future the subscription fee will be considerably reduced.
