Worst car I've ever driven

Then you clearly FAILED.

That must have been downhill, with a tailwind and the entire interior stripped out.

Huh?
I am the OP
Corsas are still junk no matter what you say. They are silly little cars for people who either: A) Can't drive properly or B) Can't afford a proper car.
I'm sure the Corsa I drove would have been much better with a manual 'box but better than down right awful is still pretty terrible.

So which am I? I drive ~40k miles a year, and I also own a 1978 Saab 99 Turbo as a fun car.

I own a corsa because it's very cheap to run and very reliable. It's a capable car that does exactly what I need.

By the way it's a 1.2 8v base model (so no glove box lid, oh no!). The only downside of it is the paint fades.

I guess in your case if economy and reliability are the ONLY considerations then sure, a Corsa is probably a fine car.

I have a different perspective on cars to most people. If economy transport is all thats required, a cheap motorcycle is the order of the day. If I want to travel in comfort then a large car with a sizeable engine is my preferred method of transport.

I find the whole concept of a small car to be unfathomable. If you need 4 wheels then surely something that makes the most of the road space makes more sense?

I agree with Rilot. Especially for 40k a year - you want to make it as untedious as possible. You need comfort, plenty of toys, something that soothes the mileage away.

Doing 40k a year in an old 1.2 Corsa is like sitting in your living room on a packing case. It's cheap but why would you want to?

The older generation Corsa's are fairly nasty in most respects but for the undemanding driver they are perfectly adequate transport for town driving etc. However, to do an annual mileage of 40k in one is simply a remarkable achievement, and surely deserves recognition as triumph of determination over human suffering and misery :D

If you have somewhere to safely park a large car at home and work, and you don't mind the economy then sure. Other people don't have these luxuries.

I dont quite get this. My 5 Series fits into the same conventional sized parking spaces as a Corsa? Or a Mondeo?

It does depend if you have offstreet parking or not though, my merc for example needs a massive space compared with something like a corsa. Visiting my brother who lives in central bristol with crowded city centre backstreet parallel parking is a nightmare :(

My dad bought a 1.4 Corsa Twist BRAND NEW when it first came out, was like 9k or 10k or something. Everyone was like "WOW OMG NICE NEW CAR" as it has the new car shine and the new car smell.

:(

Most people don't have a conventional (i.e. conforming to some local standard) sized space for parking at home, and many don't have that for parking at work either. For parking in e.g. supermarket spaces, sure the 5 series will fit, but I bet it's a lot easier to get in and out of a Corsa with cars parked either side of it.

For instance I challenge you to get your 5 series down my driveway. You'd better have the number of a decent body shop on speed dial though...

Would I fix the problem, if I were to move into your house, with an afternoon, a friend and a lumphammer or is it jammed in between two properties? :D

I can see the logic. Even if you can fit the nice shiny 5-series in the space then it's likely to get dinged by the MPV breedwagon who parks in the space next to you with kids that fling the doors open.

I got something smaller (or a city car in Foxspeak) partly because the Bora was too wide for the spaces in the work car park. Being underneath a 60's tower block the spaces are great for a Mini/Austin 1100 but the width between the pillars mean anything modern just won't fit properly 2 wide. Stick a wheel on the lines and the parking nazi's give you a £40 fine :-O
