All New Summer 2008 Transfer Merry Go Round/Rumour Mill

a lot of players we have arent playing at the Euros, OShea, Fletcher, Carrick, OH, Giggs, Scholes, Silvestre (who I read is now staying :() to name a few
Exactly, and I can guarantee you none of those are spending every week getting ****ed up. I would hazard that players like Darren Fletcher, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick are working hard on their fitness.

I would love Rooney to score more, but just because he didnt last season didnt mean he didnt perform in other areas (quite a lot of his performances wherent up front, which you cant say the same for Tevez- whos the only other worthy comparison)
I'm not just talking about his goal scoring. At the end of the season he was abysmal and he capped it with one of the worst performances I've ever seen from any player in the Champions League final.

It's no coincidence people on here constantly knock Rooneys performances, certainly the second half of the season where he was poor. He lost a lot of his ability in several areas such as his finishing, his passing, his tackling and his movement, all of which basically disappeared.

You can say the same for Tevez, who also plays a deeper position, Tevez played in Midfield for a couple of Champions League games. Rooney goes out to the left so it's very noticeable, but Tevez sits in midfield and he let Ronaldo, Nani, Giggs and Scholes (depending on who played) get further up top.

Rooney short of ability...wow what an odd thing to say. I'd agree he is short of confidence but in the majority of games we lost he did not play. His work rate and flair is amazing, yes he missed a lot of chances but still scored 18 goals in 43 apps which is not bad for a SS played out of position all season.
You misread what I said, clearly. I said at the end of the season he appeared short on not just confidence, but ability.

I'm sorry but three years ago he was hailed as the next messiah, yeah he is not THAT good but he is still the most naturally gifted English player around (apart from Scholes) and will become a great player.
The Rooney of 3 years ago was amazing. The player we have no isn't as good as the player we had then.
The Rooney of 3 years ago had real fire in him, he'd hit shots, burst past players and was an all-round angry man who the opposition feared.

They said Rooney would need to calm his temperament, the problem is, he also curbed what made him so good. Instead we've lost the fire in his game from a footballing side and instead, we've been left with a petulant little child who can't shut his mouth up and kicks out at players who take the ball off him easily.

We are the Champions domestically and of Europe, I don't understand why there is a need to be critical of players like Rooney.
Because we are always looking to improve and even before the CL final I pointed out, man for man, Rooney was the weakest member of that team.
Tevez does everything Rooney does, but he does it without losing his head and being mouthy and petulant. Tevez is also a craftier player with a lot more guile and far better movement off the ball.

Rooney's job is not only to create, but also to score, and the simple fact is that he misses FAR too many shots. People lynched Andy Cole on that 5 chances to score nonsense that was started (and was also very untrue), but Rooney certainly fits that mould and then some.

I used to have a love for Rooney and what he could do, it was amazing, he was a magician with a ball at his feet, but he's slower than he was, more injury prone, less potent in goal and doesn't go past players with the confidence (arrogance) and swagger he did. Rooney is still a very good player, but he's not as good as he was, and at Rooneys age (23 I believe), that really isn't a good position to be in.

wishful really.
Sheva and drogba have had chances to develop a partnership, obviously in training etc.

I doubt drogba will flourish again.

Drogba is past his best for sure, never liked him but he had a great spell but I would say thats over and well Sheva needs to go away from England.

I agree with all of that as you know. We have discussed it off here. I have never been a believer of OMG look how good he is at 19 just think how good he will be at 25. Rooney is already past his best.

Not only that no one seems to really know yet where to play him. It maybe better if Manu had a RVN and he filled a Beardsley type role. Hes certainly ugly enough ;)

Rooney should be concentrating on his game, it's really worrying to see a young player like that smoking. Barnes once said he had no reason to smoke or drink. His career would be over at 30-35 and he had the rest of his life to fall apart. Until then he would maintain his fitness for the club that paid him.

Rooney fell out with moyes because moyes chased him around town trying to get him out of mcdonalds and dossing with his mates. Fergie needs to start doing the same or be left with a declining player.

No matter how good people think he is, I wouldn't turn down that money. I think the Star has missed out a decimal point ;)

You could be right, there's certainly a good chance he won't progress too much further than he already has.

People went overboard because he was so far ahead of the curve at 16 it was ridiculous, so then if you assume he only makes the average amount of progression, that shouldn't close the gap too much. But then there's the possibility (maybe probability given the last 2 seasons) that any further improvements are now just fine tuning on the progress he made very early on.

So that leaves us with the Rooney we seem to have now; still a very good player, but stands out less and less because the players that develop at the more typical rate are catching up all the time. If anything he's now for the first time in his career at the point where players of similar age are actually outshining him.

To be fair, I don't think the way we play now would help any striker excel purely on goals scored, but then you look at Ronaldo's strike rate and he doesn't even play up top. I don't think it's anywhere near the point where his place in the Utd side should be questioned, what I think could be questioned is his place in the England side because he just doesn't seem to do a whole lot for the team any more.

Rooney needs to start playing the Cantona role, playing where the **** he likes and playing off a proper striker who doesn't move

Then we will start seeing the Rooney we all expected to see

Its unbelievable how anti-rooney you are

he was played out of position more often than Tevez without a shadow of doubt, and he worked his ***** off every single game

Its funny how one of the greatest manager's ever in this country doesnt agree with you (as Rooney is rarely subed before 70 minutes if at all) and yet he plays sooooo badly according to you he isnt worth his place - admittedly you didnt say that but fromm what you write it appears that way

So you think that while on holiday just because they arent getting photographed (having "THE" wedding of the summer doesnt help Rooney in this case) others arent getting drunk etc - you arent that naive surely!!!

edit - Tevez is 18 months older, had around 5 more club appearances and one more goal last season compared to Rooney and yet he is much better for the team - apart from Tevez having fewer injuries last season there isnt anything to split them (unless you want to count the longer trips Tevez had to do for Argentina against the England trips for Rooney) - there is nothing in it at all

I would agree, which is why I've always thought Tevez was too similar a player to Rooney than I would have idealy liked.

I don't watch Rooney every week like a few of you do but if his Man.U. performances are like his England ones then I can't see how he justifies a place.:)

Has Gilly got to give out the sweepstake posts JG or can you do it?

I wouldn't swap him for anyone in the world, although i do agree hes shocking for England at times
