** The Official ATI RV770/RV700 Series Review/Overclocking Thread **

All seem to work fine.

I know what you mean about CoD4 on the P35 tho, I tried Tri-Fire when the X2 came out with a 3870 and it was terrible.

Worked fine on single X2, but if you Tri-Fired the framerate just died.

Havn't had that problem with the 4850's, everything has just worked fine.

Though, when I look at the performance gains, probably a better option just to get the 4870....

Some crossfire on P35 benchies i've done:

Microsoft Vista Ultimate x64 + SP1
ATi Catalyst 8.6 Hotfix x64

Crysis v1.21 -- All HIGH, DX9, VSync Disabled, Island GPU Test

3DMark 2006 -- Stock Benchmark
3Dmark 2005 -- Stock Benchmark
3DMark 2003 -- Stock Benchmark

Lost Planet -- DX9, All Settings @ HIGH (MED Shadows), VSync Disabled, Snow Test

Devil May Cry 4 Benchmark -- DX9, All Settings @ Super High, VSync Disabled, 4x AA

FEAR -- All Settings @ Highest possible, No Soft Shadows, VSync Disabled

Interesting to see and I have been waiting to see somebody post xfire results on a p35 board to see how crippled it is.

Looking at your results it would appear that it is not good with the exception of Devil May Cry 4 however a single 4870 would still match your xfire results as the 4870 really makes use of it's bandwidth in that game. I have seen even at 8xaa a 4870 getting a better fps in scene 4 so at 4xaa it would be even better.

All your results show no better improvement than buying a single 4870 card which would be cheaper than two 4850's anyway.

Interesting to see that at 1680x 1050 4xaa in Crysis, you actually dropped performance.

Glad to see it as I have been trying to decide between buying a 4850 now and adding another later or just buying a 4870 now. Thanks, you have now made my mind up for me ;):D

Aye, I wouldn't recomend anyone who is planning to stay on P35 to get CF 4850's, they'd be far better off with a single 4870.

P35 is just a temp thing for me, i've got an X38 comming to replace it.

Yeah, I think with that test the 4x Slot card is holding the faster card back, there just isn't enough bandwidth to keep up with the demands of the game so it actually slows it down.

I've repeated the test several times and its the same every single time, there is either no improvement or a slight drop in framerate.

Other Strange thing is gurusan is that's 2 of us who get artifacting in CPU test in 3dmark with Your bios or versions of it, OK could be, but there's no way of telling that the card is dropping to a combination of 3d clocks but lower voltage !
Don't forget also Your card would Max out in CCC before You got serious .... and I've not seen others

Don't forget the 45nm P45....Loverly and cool also it does do a much better Job with 2x 8pcix2, I don't think I've seen more than 37c on the northbridge :)

Yeah but problems there as well. 4 series in CF on the p45 boards are limited as well and crippled at high res.

They shouldn't be bandwidth wise but maybe a glitch with the p45 chipset or bios problem but no guarantee that it will be solved yet.

Hence xfire on p45 boards not much better than p35 boards so your only really choices atm are x38/x48 boards.

I do not have any X38/48 boards to compare but a guy backed to back with 2 hd3870x2 with no loss on the Asus board anyway !
what's Your source..not that tweaktown review ?

Yeah. Is there a problem with their review now that I am not aware of?

IIRC a gigabyte P45 :D....I would in no way take that as close to typical !..Struck me what a bunch of muppets they are, have a read through it.

True it might be Tweaktown's problem or it might just be Gigabytes p45 boards.

However, until more people put posts up with xfire on a p45 board especially 4870's in xfire then I'm not prepared to take the risk in swapping boards as it might not be any better than my p35 board and I will have wasted my money on two 4870's :(

I have a P5Q-delux with 2 HD4850's what do You need to know ?

Seen nothing much on 4870 results by Owners here, running on anything !

I Ordered yesterday two HD4850's and a Asus P5Q Pro so once I get it all built up (need to do a complete overhaul :o) I will post some benchmarks.

:)

Phew thats exactly what I wanted to hear!

Rather have a user of the cards state that its fine than take the tweaktown review as gospel.

 You suggesting review sites are not always of the highest integrity ?.....dam right their not :D

I cannot Make a single HD4850 in a 3.3gz quad system pull more than 105watts in the desktop, I can get that down to 95 watts with speedstep !
They all claim the gtx280 uses less power at Idle..Yeah right !!,,what they all forget to say is the very good power management only works with Nvidia chipset Mobo's :D
