Anyone with a 48xx and Vista 64?

^ UT3 is good for testing these cards/drivers, always used to use it with my 4870 to test if any changes i made fixed the problem. Same with any other Unreal Engine 3 game (Mass Effect, Bioshock), they make it crash quicker than other games.

I meant is your CPU or RAM overclocked? thats what i had to clock down slightly to stop the X2 doing what you have, from 3.81GHz on my quad to 3.79GHz.. Even though a GTX 280 and 260 were fine on the same system @ 3.81GHz, and prime95 and memtest were all stable for hours.
Stock. Same settings as I used with GeForce 8800 GT, and that never had a black-screen problem.

Glad I read this thread - was on the verge of ordering a 4870.

Suffice to say that, unless ATI sort this out very soon they're going to lose my business.

Yeah Same Vertigo, I was planning a new 4870x2, 8600 core2, Vista 64bit and a few bits until I saw this thread :(
I cant live without dual screens these days

so whats the verdict with the 48xx cards with vista 64? best to stay clear of them is it?

this black screen issue sounds like the overheating vrm issue.??

well i'm not trawling the whole thread for replies so here are a few from just page 1. :p

4870 on Vista 64 here, no problems whatsoever with the drivers, only time i have had a display driver recovery is when i OC to far otherwise everything runs sweet.

No problems here with a 4850. Still using the hotfix drivers, not tried the new Catalysts yet.

8.6 hotfix here and not had a problem.

8.7 Final and Vista 64 not had a problem.

Could be an issue with the card.

8.6 hotfix and vista 64 and 4870 and no probs here

Anyway 8.7's here on vista x64 and no problems. I did have problems installing them though even on fresh install (driver wouldn't load up after restart), dloaded the driver package and ccc seperately and that sorted it (instead of the all in one). May be worth uninstalling, cleaning and then trying that.

No problems for me, I'm on the official 8.7's.

Vista 64 bit, sp1.

and my 4850 runs flawlessly too. apart from with dual screens.... but seeing as that affected my old 3850 in exactly the same way, i'd say that was driver related, not card......

My 4870X2 runs fine on Vista 64-Bit with dual displays, had none of the crashes i got with the 4870. The X2 does use different drivers though to anything currently availible for the 4870. Or it could just be differences with the hardware.

Took 3 goes to even install the drivers though. And like with the 4870 drivers i have to disable "automatic deinterlacing" in the CCC or video is pixelated. Such a crap driver team ATI have...

Tomorrow i'm going to grab the spare 19" TFT I keep in case of emergency, hook it up, and use both it and my 2007FP for 24-48 hours.

I want to see if I can replicate this problem.

If you can, run a game that uses Unreal Engine 3, these games make it happen sooner than others.

I thought X2 cards dont work properly with dual screen ? thought that the way they work they only do one screen ?

Im sure i read this about the 3850 x2

No it's SLI that can't deal with multiple monitors, Crossfire has never had a problem with it so the X2 should be fine.

(Note I'm talking about general multi-monitor support here, not this specific driver issue - couldn't say what the status of this is with the X2s)

Ahh thanks. reading this thread with great interest. As im using vista 64 with dual monitors.

one click away from pressing buy now

Well I sold my 8800Ultra back in June and have been surviving with a 7600GT, intending to get a 4870 and waiting as long as I can for prices to settle.

I'm now looking at getting a GTX280 instead but will wait as long as I can for the price to drop as much as possible.

Apparently the 180 drivers are meant to let you run dual displays on SLI, dont know when there out though.
When i had the GX2 (complete turd for high res monitors, not enough memory) i always had to enable and disable SLI when i wanted to either play a game or run both monitors, annoying.

BTW the 280 is a great card if you plan on getting one, mine coped with 2560x1600 really well.

Been using both monitors for 2 days now and no crashes at all.

When I fire up a game the second monitor just goes into standby and powers back up when I exit.
