Why doesn't Unlimited mean Unlimited anymore? :/

i get my tv programmes streamed, and surf the net at the same time no problems there, infact the adsl provider i have and been with for 3/4 years, i can say is the best BB provider out there.

Ill hazard a guess that you stream most of them illegally, and if you are streaming them legally then you can do the exact same with virgin, providing you dont stream a ridic amount between 4-12, and even if you do you're only getting cut down to broadband speeds that were more than capable of streaming said quality video 2 years ago.

Im fairly sure you cant legally stream the content available on virgin's on demand service

Wow, lots of people not liking what I posted...

Firstly you have to realise that 99% of consumers will never get anywhere near the fair use amounts, therefore most people will never see any kind of limit. (however because of the way BB works the small percentage of users using a lot cause problems for those who use a little).

Secondly with most companies YOU ARE NOT LIMITED (not limited = no limits = unlimited), most companies will not stop your internet connection at any kind of cap, your broadband will never just stop working because your "ran out of internets". Therefore the service is unlimited, argue semantics if you want but it doesn't change the fact that there is not a "limit" on what you download.

Most of you just proved my point.

I already beat it, I said free fixed line calls, Id happily pay the extra 50p for the off peak landline hours, and the 1/3rd off calls to mobile phones.

Wheres the free tv come from? Is it on par with virgin's on demand service?
Bloody well isnt it is?
Free national international calls anytime? I thought you said free evening and weekend.
Where did all this come from?
Your posts in this thread are as disjointed as in that thread you made about your precious teeth.

i get free fix line calls via voip, and very cheap mobile phone calls, 1p 3p 6p, calls to international phones, i really dont use my land line with free evening and week end calls, infact i wish they had a cheaper land line with no calls allowed just for adsl.

Its better that virgin on demand, were it comes from well cant post it in these forums i'd get banned.
i watch sports channels, movies and series etc... more and more in HD for free.

router into phone socket, my BT wireless landline phones connected to my router great set up, no hassle dial 9 to use landline, and dial normal to use voip.

The main reason being because like most government agencies they are incredibely slow to act.

So, because one company advertises immorally, everyone should and it's fine?

Talking to you is like talking to a Microsoft employee about the EUs lawsuits.

Whatever way you look at it, Bandwidth is not cheap. We have just had years of ISPs mis-selling their network capacities, and rather then admit their mistakes, they would rather try and mislead customers.

I'm not talking semantics, cost of bandwidth, reasonable usage or anything else. ISPs simply sell products by misleading customers.

They didn't take too much time about ruling Virgin's adverts about fibre optic broadband as fine (despite it being, basically, lies). So it seems they don't move that slowly.

And you're still not acknowledging that, while you may believe that it's misleading, legally it's not right now and until that changes the advertising won't either.

That is pretty much a constant though, given that we have speed limits all over the world.

ok then, saying you can borrow this ferrari any time you want doing any amount of milage you want, but atm most can go 30mph so you don't crash, and if you go over 200 miles in 10 hours you have to slow down for 2 hours so the car doesn't overheat.

Of course. And as you work for an ISP, it's all good.

Well all those phone calls can be made from virgin as an ISP no doubt can they not? The landline is just something that can be handy to have extra.

So im assuming that if its something you would get banned for then its not going to be legal, therefore its stupid that you are still comparing your deal to mine, mines completely legal and is generally perfect for joe public, you get the landline without needing voip phones etc, you get the settopbox with legal content without the need for dodgey websites and media centre pcs(which lets face it are somewhat rare still)

Lets use a car anology, im recommending someone to buy a ford focus, theyre not loads to insure etc and theyr perfect for a family.
You're saying steal a ferrari, even though its not entirely practicle for a lot of users and its illegal, but atleast you can outrun the police in it.

Companies like virgin are starting to block voip ports, just like they do with those call providers that offer really cheap phone calls.

Which doesnt really matter, since its unlimited fixed line calls 24/7 on the package i specified with virgin.
Overseas stuff is easily done through skype etc is it not?
Id hazard a guess that virgin would not dare block it all if they even are, especially since voip has many other uses some of which are extremely legit and would inevitably cause uproar, e.g. gaming voice comms and business use for conference calls.

I notice you neglected the rest of my post? Ill assume you're one of those prats that whinges about adverts but then will whinge when their favourite show to download gets cancelled, because they were too selfish etc to support it by watching it legally so that said show remained profitable enough for BUSINESSES to keep them in production.

I mentioned earlier, explicit fair use numbers are bad for the average consumer if applied uniformly. Our approach is if you download hundreds of gigs one month but usually only download 30 or 40 in a month then then in that month no action will be taken. For the average consumer thats a better outcome than being shaped to 56k the instant you pass xGB.

Explicit numbers are also less flexible, if you're breaking the FUP downloading stuff in the dead of night when the network is quiet then you'll get more sympathy than if you're doing it at peak times.

Mate, for someone who's in the industry, you seem strangely ignorant of how easy these "problems" are to solve.

I was with Nildram before they got taken over and they had an explicit number of GB per month, which was split into a peak and off-peak allowance AND any unused bandwidth from the previous month was carried over into the next.

You see, I have no problem with limits, but please tell me what they are so I can make an *informed decision* myself!!!

Not selfish, sick of large companies taking the p iss, trying to scam you out of your money, that what they do. They want your money yet dont provide the service, so i choose my own service really works, with a like help from a phone line and adsl.

Large companies keep using the cash cow and are unmotivated competition, theyll try and get every bit of use before they out a product that is better for us, even when they have complete the new product, theyll keep it under wraps for years and years.
There sooooo many things not available too the public some go as far back as the 60s in certain areas of comerce, waiting to be released.

How upset was I to find that gillete wasn't the best a man can get...

Ah I see, so you're saying it's just another example of loose advertising terms being applied liberally. I actually partially agree with your point but at least it's unreasonable for a consumer to believe that to be true, whereas it's reasonable to believe that unlimited internet means unlimited.

In my eyes you have got to be one of the dumbest members of this forum..

You're not selfish, you're sick of large companies taking the pee? Trying to scam you out of money?
So you watch your TV shows etc without adverts, and you dont pay for them, and its illegal, I think its you whos taking the ****, you're scamming someone out of money there.

Get your tinfoil hat on, everyones out to get YOU, even the dentist!

It sounds to me like a cartel. If innovation fostered competition, some broadband providers would have shiftied over to japan to find out how they can provide 90Mb broadband for the same price we have 8Mb.

But as mattheman has pointed out, there just isn't the competition to drive down prices... costs for some things are going UP (text messaging anyone?).

Capitalism was supposed to foster competition, but tbh companies know what people are willing to pay. We'll see how they handle a recession...

text messaging prices are going up???
Since when?!?!?!
I imagine if they had it was just to try and sway a few PAYG users to get on the £20 sim-only contracts with unlimited text etc...

Of course its a cartel, much like most things in this country (and others).

It's not a huge leap to assume that it is since the Mobile Phone monopolies/cartels were ordered to charge less for roaming costs.
