GTA IV and Graphics Card Memory

Loads of threads about how bad it is i saw one chap with a quad core and a gtx 280, 4 gig ram, if memory serves he was running 1680x1050 with high settings no aa/af and he was getting 29fps, its terrible on the pc from what i seen so far.

yeah, runs like crap!! on my Q9550 @ 4GHz with 8GB Ram and an overclocked 4870x2! it really sucks :S and i cant even fully max it out due to video memory useage of the game being over 1GB!

The console version is "Low" settings at 1280x720.

Rockstar have even said that the highest end systems of today should play the game on medium as thats current level graphics.

we have 2gig of memory on our 4780x2s and it only allows us 1gig LOL

not to mention that the game runs like utter crapola, i wouldnt wish this game on anybody do NOT PAY FOR THIS port.

this is 1 game that i never thought i would say this, the xbox360 version is 100 times better in the graphic department aswell as how it runs.

It plays very good for me.......

General rule of thumb is to keep your resource meter in the green. If it goes amber you will get some swapping of textures in some areas from the ram or even worse HDD. This causes the stutters people are complaining about.

I notice NO visible difference from having my view distance set to 40 or 100.....Not sure whats actually happening visibility wise but this does kill framerate, and fills your video memory quick. I assume the difference here will only show in the chopper, so no biggie plus the consoles equivalent is 20.

I can play all maxed with view distance 42 and 1680x1050 res, and it runs far better than the PS3 version. I love how you can turn the vaseline filter on and off. I wish I could force a bit of AA on my 4870x2, but I can't.

It regularly uses 80%+ of all four of my cores simultaneously at these settings, so the dual core guys will have to look at settings which will relieve pressure off the CPU. View, objects and shadows will have to be dropped.

There are too many cars with traffic density set to 100, I find 70 to be better and it helps performance.

I've seen a few guys around here and on some other forums telling people not to bother with quad cores or 1GB video cards as they were not needed. To be frank I have no sympathy if they whinge now they are needed, and a lot are.....

what resource meter are we talking about here please?

On graphics settings page it shows how much Vram you will use at current settings versus available Vram.

As you change settings it shows you what affect it will have on V Ram usage. The big Vram eaters are view distance and texture settings.

I use a view distance of 42 at a res of 1680x1025 with a traffic density of 70. The rest is maxed out....

Runs at 25-50fps, lovely old job.

Q6600@ 3.3 and 4870x2 by the way.
