We went to see it last night and I thought it was pretty "meh" but my boyfriend enjoyed it. He has read the book, I've not.
I was expecting a cross between V for Vendetta and Sin City, and I think that was fairly accurate. I felt that some scenes were more gruesome than they really needed to be, although I have seen 300, so that wasn't a huge surprise. I have been told that the book isn't as gorey though, especially when Dr Manhattan kills people.
It wasn't the story that bothered me, it was the method of delivery. I think the montage over the credits was good, but it was too much story over too short a time. I know nothing about US history/politics, so if I took a second to think about the relevance of something then I missed the next point. I don't like things being spelled out, but it almost felt like the background was thrown in rather than actually thought about.
I realise that there's no way they could ever get everything into a movie, but there were several points where I just went "huh, was that supposed to mean something to me?". Two things that really bothered me were the first conversation between Jon and Laurie when he tells her to call Dan, and when Rorschach goes to see Moloch. Clearly there is more to both of these scenes if you've read the book which has more character history, but they just felt awkward to me.

From all of that, it sounds like Watchmen would have been better as a two-part production like Kill Bill.
Its interesting to read opinions of people who haven't read the comic book because from those I can attempt to ascertain whether the film is actually any good or not as a standalone piece.
Personally felt that it could only be watched without reading the book if you were a comic book film fan and head your comic book head on.
I had read the book numerous times and also books on Watchmen & Philosophy so was really ready for what was gonna happen, already knowing it back and forth!

Can someone just confirm, that this isn't a kids film & is full of people getting smacked, smashed, pulped, squashed, torn, ripped and generally deprived of their bodily parts....and that it's NOT full of ****ty CGI blood. Thanks 
Ermmm saw this last night with the missus, bro and his fiancee and i have to say...what a pile of steaming dog crap it was. Over 2 hrs long and not nearly enough action :/. Not something id recommend to any of my mates to go and see...thought it just dragged on far too long.
Only redeeming feature of the movie was the sex scenes with that chick, Laurie Jupiter...damn shes hot

Other than that i wouldnt go and see the movie again even if it was free...just far too confusing for my liking. Not as good as 300 which Zack did a few yrs ago...that was awesome.

This is a failure on the part of the marketing.
Because its been marketed as a generic Hollywood blockbuster when it clearly isn't such a thing, people are evidently going to see it with completely the wrong expectations.

Finally seen it, what a superb adaptation. The only questionable thing was Bubastis suddenly turning up with explanation. I thought with the change to the ending they would have cut her out to

Exactly - it isn't a totally action packed comic book movie in the slightest - it's not about that at all.

Worst film I have seen in a long time, I thought Max Payne was better. In fact Iron Man is still the best super hero film for me so far, but I am a big fan of R Downy Jr.
- Difficulty concentrating on a film that constantly dangles blue CGI peen in front of you every 10min.

- Such an overbearing attempt to be artistic it made Sin City look good (which IMO was also a awful film).
- Shallow storyline that looks like it was directly ripped from a classic Japanese Anime (He is good, no he is bad but doing good things oh and BTW he is your dad...).

Storyline ripped??? So pretty much not like every other superhero film, spiderman, batman, hulk, fantastic four, etc?
Anything different is relieving.
Also a few of the songs are era related inc lyrics if you bothered to care.
Acting was superb imo, at least with not very well known actors it feels more like real life, none of this over-acting "this never happens in real social situations" hollywood has.

Seems like quite a few people have completely missed the point of the film and/or gone in expecting the wrong thing. And I'm not just saying that because I disagree, several people have made good points. It's also a shame they didn't advertise it better.
Spot on with that analysis...it seems like the marketing only concentrated on the action bits which were far and few in between the actual storyline...i hate to say it but the storyline just bored me silly...in fact i almost fell asleep...and not even an hr went by when 10 or so people just got up and walked out....shame we didnt and thought we would give it a bit of time to see if it picked up...sadly it didnt.
I was there for my sisters birthday, we were all excited to see it... unfortuntely it was a massive let down. My brother actually did fall asleep several times (although he is 40 now

i agree, and cause it was vietnam, it had a great selection of music

Watchmen was going to be like marmite though. I mean, I hated 300 and disliked The Dark Knight so our opinions can't all match up (obviously).
I haven't actually seen the Watchmen movie yet and I don't really intend to in the cinema at least. I read the graphic novel around 5 years ago and thought it was awesome overall, especially towards the end.
Films shouldn't be long in duration for the sake of being long and I can easily understand how people see Watchmen as being boring in film form. Although for this type of adaptation, the length of the movie is justified.
