HOW DO I BUILD MY PC NOW IVE BOUGHT ALL THE BITS?

1. Change boot sequence to CD then Floppy then HDD
2. Pop the Windows CD in the CD Drive and restart the computer
3. Press F6 (I think it's F6) to boot
4. Follow on screen instructions and install the OS.

Edit: In the motherboard manual it will show what each light on the mobo means. If it's registered all the componants then I think no lights should show up. Read the manual.

Tab to 'advanced' and select CPU configuration - i've d/led your manual (i've not become psychic) It wont recognise your gpu as such - but you have a display so you're fine. It's cpu and memory we're concerned with but tbh, you can still install your OS if these are wrong - but it's good practice to get them right before you do.

You should be ok - and if it is see my above posts about boot priority and install.

EDIT: or the immediate above post. But don't forget to exit and SAVE your changes before you leave the BIOS.

ok - i have this ubuntu OS on a disc downloaded today - i have Vista coming probably on friday - is it worth me running ubuntu only to change it in a couple of days?

The decision is all yours on that one. It will test your system for a few days - and you may get some gameplay in.

But obviously you'll have another install to do - it's all experience which would be good for you.

EDIT:
loading ubuntu......

We knew you would :)

I'd just like to say for my first post, what an immense thread. I'm planning my first build now and this will be a help to me also. So thanks to benenhausen and the rest of the posters on this thread... I'll deffo keep on posting when I have more concrete plans on my build :)

good luck friend - you will get all the help you need and more on here

very quickly - dont i have to run all the discs that came with the mobo, gpu, etc, first???

No you dont mate, install the OS first.

I dont even bother with the motherboard CDs they are usaully filled with rubbish apps and out of date drivers. Occasionally they will have DVD playback software which is useful.

Just get the latest drivers for your chipset and GPU off the internet.

No just the OS first - you get the rest off the internet later - don't use the discs they will be out of date already and half the stuff on them you wont need or just get in the way.

EDIT - i was too slow with that reply - see above.

I liked their stuff before the 'American Idiot' album more.

You'll have sound - as long as you've plugged in the wires correctly ;)
