Growing Vegetables

it should have purple flowers on it just now and the leaves are pretty big and rough to the touch.
When we moved to our house the garden was 6 foot weeds and loads of comfrey :)

Think i will just give the nettles a bash got hundreds of them roundabout

My big pots of veg have been moved to a friends house to avoid getting wrecked whilst I move house. I've moved my smaller herbs up to the bedroom now to get them out the way, so snapped some pics:

Coriander and Thyme seeds planted the other day.

Some greek basil and parsley I got from the garden centre a few weeks back. Could really use new pots!

A stressed mint!

And the big basil about the same.

My new house has an actual garden with some mud. I'm excited!!

Loving the looks of the herbs,Mint grows like wild fire outside, so if you dont want it going Crazy i would leave it in the pot. My uncles small plot turned into about 3s*** because it was left to grow lol

Haha the little vegetable patch here is about the same, back from the previous owners. They said they popped in a little bush like mine, next thing you know its gone 6ftx3ft. Haha mine will be staying in the pot! The other plant gets used enough that the mint can hopefully stay in a smallish pot.

Quick question: my chilli seedlings are through and its really time they went over into pots. Is it one seedling per pot?

I generaly would thin them out to one seed per pot but im no expert on chillis, but they do grow pretty large

Yea its my first time with Chillis to, but i bought them as tiny little plants, only cost £1.50 from local garden centre.

got a tom plant from a shop and it was quite tall but in a small pot, left it to grow but it wilts ALL the time (but has started producing flowers and tom's)

Tried putting it outside in the sun but it was the same, im thinking whack it in a much bigger pot and continually water it (it loves water, even though it feels like im drowing it, it usually perks up)

picked up a strawberry plant (well 6 small ones) at the same time a few weeks back and thats started flowering strawberries now :D

What a terrific thread! Am pleased and surprised by the vast amount interested in this.

My post is actually, me hoping to get some help. Have recently bought a grow house (4 tiers plastic framed mini greenhouse, about 6ft tall), which wife and I are growing a mix of herbs, tomatos, chillis etc. We basically started with just herbs in a large planter outside, but literally one evening we stripped of all of them by slugs and snails. We don't have an grass in the garden and all our plants are in pots. Literally one night and we are left with storks of mint and basil and several other herbs. Hence our purchase of the mini greenhouse. We are really enjoying growing things inside as we leave it open during the day to let air (and so not to burn the plants), and close it of a nighttime to stop the slugs/snails. All seems working.

My question is, we would like to expand to some further veggie growing. Perhaps, some large buckets, large planters. What can we grow in large pots/growbags which the slugs and snails do not like or will leave alone.

My second question is, I also thought it would be nice to grow some strawberries, blackberries etc. again in large pots/planters. Again, will they be destroyed by slugs/snails/birds? I know you can get netting to stop the birds, but I tried netting with the herbs and the slugs/snails seemed to still get through.

Thanks; will post some pictures of where we are at with ours later as everythign looks to be taking off nicely.

Lastly, we have no ground to replant them in, so recommendations would have to be able to be grown to crop in a large bucket/pot/planter.

The caterpillars (I think) wrecked my first go at beans, but the second time round their were chickens in the garden and they got all the slugs etc! On from then in this place, i've not had an issue with bugs. I am in a similar situation with no ground to plant in, and have successfully grown potatos, beans, and peas in big pots/buckets. :)

Which mini greenhouse thing did you get? Im sort of outgrowing propagators on the windowsill now so could use something for next year, but some seem real flimsy and not up to the task.

Quite a lot can be grown in containers, or you could make a small raised bed area. If your space is at a premium I'd stick to the faster growing, high yield things and steer clear of things that need a lot of time or space to crop. I'd start with potatoes either in bags or tubs (though you're a little late for these now). Carrots if the tub is deep enough. Tomatoes, courgette &, aubergene can all be grown in tubs or growbags and you can grow some types of cherry toms in hanging baskets. If you have a wide tum make wigwam for beans. Strawberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, gooseberries are all geed for containers. Plus you have your other salad veg like lettuce, cucumber & raddish which would do well.

Thanks for the replies; although what can I grow which wont get destroyed by slugs/snails. I don't really want to have to employ chickens ;)

As for growhouse. I bought the 4 tier one from B&Q. It cost £22, can be put together really quickly (no tool required) and is actually really sturdy. I also, wrapped loads of netting round the bottom to stop anything coming up and also used plant wire to stop shelves from rattling (five minute job). The shelves can be removed too. Argos sell one similar, but is more expensive and actually not quite as good. Defo recommended by me :)

Here just incase anyone forgot or never knew.

The chillis took a good few weeks to flower but all came realy quick once one appeared, Id say it was about 3 months from when i bought them possibly longer

We are using tires we picked up from an abandoned garage/bodyshop round the corner from where we live, as our raised beds.
Don't know what we will do with them when we have finished growing stuff... can hardly dump them where we got them from can we? :D

We simply couldnt afford wooden raised beds as we were looking at over £100 for the timber, and we couldnt justify it.

Currently have Spuds and tomatoes in the tires, and will be adding carrots and beetroot (YUK!) and possibly lettii depending on if we have space or not.

Strawberrys are starting to appear too.

Got ourselves one of those plastic tower greenhouse thing. Seems to work well. Seedlings are in that until they are ready to be transplanted into tires or pots.

We also picked up mint, chives, corriander (which has started to flower now :( ) and basil from Tesco's in growing pots, as well as some live lettece which is really nice to pick and eat right away.

As ever, Im using Roundup on the brambles and bindweed that keeps rearing its ugly head everywhere in the garden.

Also took the time to give the new lawn its first cut. Looks very nice, and isnt as patch as I thought it'd be. Need to reseed a litle bit, then do the other side of the garden and go from there.
