WRT54GL with tomato work perfect with 50mb :)

I used to use DD-WRT on my router, but found that it severely limited the full capability of 50mbit. Switched to Tomato and instantly browsing and download speeds increased, but still not full 50mbit (more like 38ish).

I've got a WRT54GS though, an older model I suspect.

Have you checked that you are actually getting 50mbit in the first place by connecting straight to the modem?
 
For those of you getting poor speeds from the 50meg service I'd advise reporting it as a technical fault. As I previously mentioned I'm getting real world speeds of around 1Mbit - 12Mbit and it sometimes jumps to 20 on some speedtests (never on proper file downloads) during the late hours. When I called Virgin the first call centre script monkey told me I had spyware (I almost wet myself with rage at such a rubbish answer and I think he nearly wet himself when I (very politely) gave him a hundred technical reasons why that wasn't the case (that and I don't think he understood english very well as he just kept repeating his script)) and he fobbed me off my telling me he would "send my modem a boosting signal". Obviously he did sweet FA.

Next day I called again and this fellow seemed a lot more knowledgeable. He said that some of the packets he was sending to my modem were not getting through and that it's possible my speed issue is due to packet loss and offered to send an engineer round for the next working day. This sounds much more promising and we'll see if this will sort the problem.

To be honest I'm still a little sceptical about what I'm being told. I'm quite certain that the cause is due to oversubscription in my area, but only time will tell.

I've had 50mbit for about 2 months now and it is pretty good. Surfing isn't really any faster but i wasnt expecting that. Usenet downloads are awesome.. 15gb takes about 30-40 min

Oh ok bigred.. :( looks like I am gonna have to buy a new router at some point then as I love the tomato firmware.

WRT54GL seems like an option I also saw your post wesley over at cableforum. I also asked there if there is a reason why WRT54GL can cope with 50mbit speeds and the WRT54GS can't.. looking at the specs on wikipedia they have the same CPU and RAM amount. Very strange.. Ethernet chipset difference perhaps?

After a few days with Tomato are things still working ok with the WRT54GL Wesley?
 
i got the 50mb when it was available in my place but is it ane better for gaming on server to the us coss i cant afford it really and i was looking to drop back to the 20 will i notice ane diff ?

keep it in your mind, with speedtest website, normally i get 50mb 9 out 10 times from http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/

but 50mb 1 out of 10 times from http://www.speedtest.net/

so speedtest websites are vary so dont rely on them. i ALWAYS get full 50mb from usenet, anytime in day

No you won't notice any difference with gaming, much like you don't see any difference between 20mb and 50mb web browsing.. They are both low bandwidth consuming activities.

Ping times are what matters in gaming and on the same network they will always be the same, if it be a 20mb or 200mb connection. The bandwith quoted in megabits per second is just width of the pipe (so to speak) of how much data can be transfered. Speed in terms of ping times and response would be the same... I might go as far to say that rolling back to 20mb might even see better ping times as Virgin Media seem to be suffering with an over subscribed 50mb service in some parts of the country.

I've 'only' been getting ~4500kb/s from 20 Astraweb connections the last couple of weeks. Anyone else experiencing the same? I am able to confirm my broadband is working at full speed from other servers, so I don't think it's the service that's slow.
 
I might be seriously tempted to get a GL in this case.
I never wanted to lose the GS with tomato on it, and whilst the other halfs laptop is 802.11n, she's only browsing on it and can live with 'g'.

It sounds counterintuitive, but try lowering the number of connections.
When I moved to 50Mb I used to not get great speeds where I'd maxed out 20Mb before. I found that reducing the connections to 8 made the difference. Start with 4 and keep added 1 at a time until you max out. Carry on adding until you start seeing slowdowns. Then drop the number of connection back to half way to when you started maxing out...... ie. Max out at 10, slows at 14, drop back to 12.
 
Yeah i had this problem on 50mb but not on 20mb, i find 12 connections the sweet spot for me on 50mb on Astraweb which gives me around 6.2mb/s download speed
