Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Well, a week later and I've got to say I am a little disappointed with the service. It's just so inconsistent, it'll be happily pulling down at max speed then randomly drop to around 300-400kb/sec for a minute or so. It's not just downloads that slow during these slowdowns, general browsing slows to a crawl too with timeouts etc happening.

It's great when it's running at full speed, but these slowdowns are really frustrating :(

Yeah I was having that exact problem. I got my 50mbit installed back in April this year and within the first hour I found exactly the same thing. The problem I had is that when my speed dropped to 400-600KB/sec levels, it wouldn't rise again for a few days. I had to give up using it and went back to my Be ADSL2 connection as support basically told me they had no idea what to do. I ended up downgrading it to 20mbit which was fine but I still couldn't really be bothered to use it.

I have no idea what is causing the random speed dips, but you'll also find that during periods where your speed drops and you're getting timeouts etc, you'll be getting very bad packet loss - just try a ping -t to google.co.uk or anywhere else to prove it. I was seeing about 60% packet loss.

Last week I thought I'd try upgrading to 50mbit again and so far it's been fine. I've only seen 3 instances of speed drops so far .. I can tolerate it lasting a few minutes, but not a few days.

I had exactly the same issue. It took VM weeks to actually work out the problem. I had tons of engineers visit over the space of 2 weeks and they even took my area's exchange down to replace 2 parts. The head guy in charge of the 50meg rollout even contacted me.

After 2 weeks it was slightly better (I could actually get onto the internet) but I had bad packet loss and the speed was constantly spiking. In the end they swapped out my router (I had previously asked for this to be done but they were 100% sure it wasn't the issue). I haven't had a problem since, I can max out my speed whenever I try and it no longer spikes/drops.

Got mine coming on the 7 nov , on 20 at the moment and never had any problems wit it , hope 50 goes the same way , tried to charge me 51pounds for it but after throwing me toys about ;) got it for same price as I was paying for 20 so I'm happy .

I had the 50Mbit installed on Friday, but it's still not activated. The VM guys says there's a nationwide problem with activations on all their services. Takes the cake. Anyone else had this problem?

haha, im on the 150meg option, only comes with 0.7 upload though :(

Nah, im on 20meg, but those speed tests give stupidly inaccurate results.

Right just upgraded to 50mb and I was paying £67 for v+ xl tv/20mb

Now paying £60.50 for same package but 50MB! :D

1 month waiting list for the install though! Oh and I couldnt blag off the £30 installation :(

Just waiting for my 50mb to be installed, on the 31st. Because I just moved house I had an option of virgin or adsl and tbh I've wanted virgin for years for good pings as a gamer and much better speeds. Let's hope it is up to the hype :D

Well i had virgin 20mb last year when i lived a 5minute drive from where i live now. We got usually about 3-5mb and in the dead of night could sometimes get above 10mb, virgin said they had oversubscribed the lines, were sorry, was nothing they could do and gave us £15/month off.
Now i have moved into a new house, which probably uses the same exchange (Newcastle) as its fairly close to last years. We have 50mb now. we were thinking, surely they cant have oversubscribed this...well they havnt and they refuse to accept our internet isnt working at full capacity even though we were getting like 15-25mb at the best of times, which is fantastic coming from the 3mb of last year, however this last week the internet has been nigh on unusable, any online game is literally totally unplayable, iplayer says we dont have enough bandwidth to use it, youtube doesnt load, and the only way to get any websites is through opendns. virgin say we're getting 50mb...
well this was tested just now, im fairly sure this is off-peak and therefore superfast right? no one else is using the internet in our house. im hard-wired to the router.

(the ping keeps lagging out so i screenshotted it)
I've done all the usual reboot the router a million times reboot the modem etc etc, its just this last week it seems to have totally broken. What do i say to virgin (preferrably translated to indian please) to get them to do anything about this?

As soon as i stop being a student at the end of this year im never going near anything virgin media related with a 3km bargepoll.

The best way to test for that kind of thing is in dos
Press start\run\ type in cmd\ in the box that opens type in ping bbc.co.uk and see what you get.
You also can use tracert bbc.co.uk as well.

When I called through to upgrad they said it was a problem and they should all be sorted by 9PM tonight.

Still not sorted. Called them again this morning. There's still a problem activating modems it seems. They don't know when this is going to be fixed.
This sucks. I like the internet service but the customer service is awful.

After ringing up and saying i want to make a formal complaint, magically i get sent to an english person, and what dya know, he knows exactly whats going on an explains the situation, the newcastle area lines are screwed, they have been working on them and should be fixed by 9pm tonight, as a sorry we get £20/month off.

however i have a strange feeling that knowing virgin, it will still be terrible after 9pm tonight...
