Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Had mine installed today. Speeds were all over the place at first, but have improved now. Getting a steady 5.5mb/sec from Astraweb, a little down on what it should be but I'll keep an eye on it over the next few days.

Anyone in the Preston (PR5) Lancashire area to say if it's any good this 50mb malarky?
Thinking of upgrading soon, Cheers.

ps what cable modem do you get given on this 50mb, just so i'd know i'm not fobbed off with a non-compatible cable modem of lesser quality. :D

Ok, i guess it's the one shown in the pics on the website the one that looks similar in shape to the 1st gen Sony PS3.
I've got an Apple airport extreme base station so i'll keep that, rather than use the wireless router provided. It should be ok i guess.
Thanks guys.

Guys, I've just realised Virgin have crashed their 50Mb package prices. On their current system Phone + TV + 50Mb broadband works out cheaper by £2 than my current identical 20Mb package, but if I want to upgrade online they want £52 for 50Mb!!

Question is, surely if I phone up and whinge and offer going onto a new 12 month minimum contract they have to offer me the low prices?

I've been with them since Cabletel days and the best offer they would give me (after 4 calls) is the same price as a new customer :).

They told me that if I change any service I'll lose all my loyalty bonus

I'm waiting until my exchange is unbundled then I'm off..........

ARRRRGGGGGGHHH!!!!!

God knows how, but VM have managed to royally ****-up my email account since having the 50mb installed. Basically my email account is 'currently disabled' and nobody at VM can understand why, or re-enable it. I have spent silly amounts of time on the phone to them over this and still no joy (it doesn't help when I get through to the Indian call centre and the person doesn't have a ****ing clue what they are doing, I might as well be talking to a machine). Still, at least the last person I spoke to was in the UK and I managed to make a little progress. As it stands they have referred it to their internal IT department who are looking into it.

Really annoying problem this, it's my main email addy and I use it daily :(

That aside I'm reasonably happy with the service, speeds do seem to vary a lot more than the other tiers but most of the time I can pull a solid 5.5mb/sec from Astraweb.

Day off work waiting for Virgin to come install my 50mb.......6pm no show. Someone in India will be getting a very angry call tomo!

Don't forget to claim your £10 no show monies(yeh I know it's not much)

I have 50mb but have to reboot the router every few days as I lose internet, is this happening for anyone else?

Ferret

I have to reset mine every few hours untill the modems power levels come down
