Virgin Media Discussion Thread

I had 50 meg installed yesterday, and so far, I've had varying speed results.

When connected via the provided Netgear router, I get the following results:

But when connected directly to the router, I get:

I have also attempted to download a 1.4GB demo file from gamefiles.virginmedia.com, I get a download speed of about 2.5 MB/Sec.

From the above results, what are your opinions? Any suggestions/advice would be great.

Phil

Following on from my earlier post....I have decided the best place for him to install the cable would be at the back of the house (furthest away from the street). Is this possible? I guess he would have to run cable over the roof or round the side of the house (semi-detached).

There is a feed into the house at the front in the sitting room, but I don't want the modem / router in there.

Do I have a choice?

Years ago when I still lived with my mum, I had cable installed and got the guy to do so exactly as you describe. It wasn't an issue, they just ran the cable around the side of the (semi), under the guttering and into the back bedroom. I'm sure this would still be possible if you ask nicely. :)

Well that's a good sign! Fingers crossed he's a nice guy and he'll do this then. I really wat all my network gear and NAS under the stairs in a nice big, cool, cupboard.

Got 2.3MB/s from that file using 4 threads on my newly installed Virgin 20Mb - took the plunge back to VM, fingers crossed I dont get oversubscription issues again :/

Could he not just go through your attic? drill a hole in the ceiling and drop the cable down? That's what I have.

Well he could - But I don't really want unsightly cables coming through celings and stuff. It would be much better, and most likley easier for him, to go through a wall, then into a cupboard 5" opposite.

I presume the engineer would tac it all to the skirting boards etc?

Had terrible trouble with Virgin over having 50mb installed.

They're maintaining that I have to pay the £50 installation charge even though the guy that came to install it had no idea what he was doing with an iMac and I ended up setting up the hardware and settings myself.

Has anyone managed to get their £50 charge waived, as I'm sure quite a few have? They've said if I can find anyone that has had it waived and give their account number, they'll waive it for me.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

I'm sure the nstaller will have no problem doing this. The installer who came round to do mine (50meg, TV and 1 extra box) ran the modem cable along the bottom of the house, through the garage then up under the floor boards into my office bedroom. The extra set top box cable was again routed along the bottom of the house, up the side ofthe house and into my main bedroom. All cables were clipped to the bricks and he was going to clip them to the skirting board / floor boards but I requested not to as I am currently decorating.

I suggest what would help and guarantee him to run cables where you want is to have a definite idea in your head before he gets there rather than letting him decide..... then obviously supply plentiful tea and biscuits.

Well, mine wasnt installed this saturday as it was supposed to be, received an email ages ago saying they are doing thecredit check and STILL havent heard back :/

LOL at them saying that, of course they will waiver it, they did for me and other mates I know, although it did take an email to the MD at the time cause of the hassle I was having.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to help me out, would you?

I need a Virgin Media account number of someone that had the £50 waived and they'll do the same for me. They're being a real pain over this and I'm at my wits' end!

No worries if not.

Just phone back.

You get a new person every single time. So you simply have to keep nagging away.

I got mine free as well, largely because they cocked up the install.

They will swear black is blue.

I got a deal for M+ TV, M Phone, 50MB Broadband and a V+ Box for £44 a month.

Only to find after they eventually did the install (many days, about 10 phone calls and 3 hours on the phone later) that they were charging me £49.50

I went through to customer services who insisted they didn't do that deal. Then spoke to a manager, who insisted the same. I ended up having to go back through to retentions where they eventually found the deal on my file that had already been agreed previously.

Virgin Media has awful customer services. It is just a fact.

Fortunately, the actual 50mb service seems quite reliable. Much better then 20mb by a country mile.

That sounds good. I will report back tomorrow with findings - I'll have copius Tea & biscuits waiting for him. It's certainly not a difficult job, but as there is already a entry point at the front of the house a lazy engineer may try his luck.

I know exactly where I'd like the cable to enter the house, and where I'd like the box to be, and how I'd like the cable put into the cupboard, so fingers crossed!

Well that's the main thing I suppose! :)

What's the 20mb connection like now? Is it stable? I've been on 10mb for a while now and am thinking it's time to upgrade. I'd need to know if i'll get what i pay for and if not can you revert back to 10mb and how soon?

I've heard someone refer to it as a "death upgrade" surely it can't be that bad?

I'm also steering clear of 50mb for now.

Main reason i'm thinking of the upgrade is for online gaming.

When i'm on the PS3 i've got a nice connection but when my bro joins my game on his PS3 in his room my connection gets chopped in half or even goes to 1 quarter.

The wireless signal to mine is at 60% 1 wall between and his is 100% in same room as router.

Any suggestions or is it just in need of a faster connection speed?

Are any Edinburgh users here got 50Mb, I'm thinking of getting it, if it's worth the extra £8 pound over and above the 20Mb package. I'm on the Large (10Mb) just now costing £25.

I'm in EH11 here, 50MB service has been running at 12Mbps max and can whittle down to 1.5Mbps and below during peak hours. It's definitely due to Virgin's end. The engineer did a speed test direct with Virgin's internal testing server and got close to 50Mbps, however real world results suck. Probably due to over subscription or outages or something.

Unsurprisingly Virgin's service status page shows no problems.

Not a good experience so far.

I think you would get different opinions up and down the country with both them questions.

I was quick to adopt 20mb at first it was ok but as the months went on I saw a decline in speeds presumably as my local area became over subscribed. It took around 8 months for noticeable improvements to be seen. Now my 20mb is solid and has been for a year.

I think the same can be seen with 50mb by looking at various forums.

I have my installation date for 50mb next Friday.. will see how it goes.
