Weekend Football Thread *spoilers be inside*

Well in that case Guardiola is a moron, no wonder Barcelona don't win everything is Spain then. If you go for entertainment over results then you clearly aren't a very good manager

Yes, he's awful and so are Barcelona. Or maybe they have a philosophy on how they think football should be played and they stick to it? It's clearly not working anyway.

Won everything last year in Spain?

Because the English teams are willing to sacrifice football for results.
I want to watch good football, I don't want to see two defensive sides slug it out in a Champions League final. Boring.

Don't watch English football then?

That's what it's all about to me, unfortunately there's such a monumental amount of money involved, everybody would rather set out to not lose, rather than to win. Football to me is a game that should be enjoyed, you shouldn't be terrified of losing like almost every team are at the minute. I was really excited up until about 4:10pm yesterday, all week Ancelotti was saying that Chelsea will attack Arsenal and try and play football, I didn't know that was his definition :(

Agree, Sky and the money is the worst thing that has happened to English football, teams are scared to lose.

Look at Liverpool, all the stories are about not getting the money from finishing 4th.

Chelsea are a defensive side, same last year when Hiddink said they would play against Barca, that was embarassing for Chelsea and English football imo, such a poor show.

Until the attitude of English people change, and they learn to want to watch good football, nothing will change.

Tosic "needs to bulk up", only in England.

Do you watch low level Spanish football? It's painfully ****....

I love Spanish football, find it far, far better to watch than English football (as a neutral). The football is controlled, skillful, classy and entertaining. The teams consciously try and play the ball on the ground and make good attacking moves. It's not for everyone, that's fair enough, most English fans love a good hard tackle and a hoof to the 6ft3 CF.

He does though. English football is physical, and he's not exactly amazingly fast, so needs to hold his own, which he can't do being built like a beansprout. I prefer watching the style of football in Spain, but i hate how slow it is too. At least English football is sometimes like tennis, one end to the other for 90 mins. Fun to watch, oh and you get to see the own goals/howlers here too :D

Yeah, the difference being that it's slower to pass the ball than it is to blast it up front.

Did you not see El Clasico ?
End to End for 90 minutes, and great football in between. So what if it was only 1-0?

Spain isn't "slow" it's just that the English game is becoming too fast. Play Football, don't just kick it up front.
Messi would need to bulk up to play in England in that case.

having a 'philosophy' means you are not able to adapt to the situation. If Guardiola would honestly take a 3-0 defeat while playing attacking football over a 1-0 victory with a defensive performance (and personally I don't think he would) Then he is not a good manager. Choosing the right tactics for the right game is part of being a good manager.

As a general rule you only need to bulk up if you are not sublime on the ball. Berbatov isnt built as such but he rarely loses the ball. Messi is amazing to watch, I have seem him get surrounded by 4 or more players and still come out with the ball, pretty sure that was against us last season in the CL fianl.

I don't really understand your point at all. Back in reality, Barcelona set up the same every game, they never play defensively, same as Wenger would never change his formation, it's foolish (and quite possibly wrong) but it's admirable at the same time.

Yes I did watch it. And Messi is already really strong for his size, and also Messi is Messi....not Tosic. Not all the games in Spain are end to end, it was the two best teams fighting it out in a slug fest to stay top/gain top spot. And it is 'slow' considering, the big games maybe not, every other is.

I feel people are making judgements on Spanish football without really watching enough of it, it's far from slow

I watch Spanish football often, and not only the Barcelona/Real Madrid. It is at a slow standard.

And the year before?

You are getting confused between what is good football, and what is good football to watch. Just because you don't enjoy it, doesn't mean it isn't good football.

no it isn't. It clearly isn't admirable otherwise it would win everything. If Barca knew when to attack and defend then they would be dominating Spanish football (which they aren't)

Tummy you are inconsistent. You say that teams who play beautiful football win competitions then you say english teams have dominated the cl by playing defensively and are boring.

Barca are the best team in the world and with the players they have of course they play the way they do. Real have just spent £200mil to buy flair players so of course they will be good to watch. I bet if chelsea spent that money in one summer you'd say they were vulgar and trying to buy success...

I don't watch the spanish league so can't comment on its overall quality. What I can say is that the english domination of the cl in recent years where we have 4 very high performing teams compared to spain's one suggests that we have more really good teams - this may be changing this year though.

It's not slow, nor did Real and Barca "slug" it out.

End to end, fast attacking football was what I saw last night, played on the floor and with very good technical players.

The only hint of England in that game was Real kicking players when they couldn't get the ball off them.

Do you know what I meant? Were or were they not literally pounding at each others goal?

Probably right, but a CL final between Chelsea and Man Utd last year would have just been awful. After the Chelsea vs Barca semi (where Chelsea deserved to go through I guess) I felt ashamed to be associated with English football, such was the amount I disagreed with what Chelsea set out to do. I'll always hate teams that play anti-football, it means I'll never follow a team who are mega successful probably as I'm not prepared as a fan with free choice, to watch crap defensive football
