No I bought the 920 C0/C1 as a transitory chip for 930 coming end of FEB/March :D;)
I see! :)

Well thanks for your contribution to this thread and thanks for all the off topic spam and whatnot . . . I don't think there is anything else you can add here so have a nice weekend and happy clocking!

Well this thread is pages and pages of ramblings.

I was just joining in.:p

Nothing in responce TUTE?

Didn't think so :p

Not really mate. Given that i'm a massive SFF fan I have to prioritise things like power and heat over all, which means that the i7-920 is off the radar.

And at the moment, there are no mini-ITX AMD AM3 boards with DDR2 and a full PCIe x16 slot.

AMD are fantastic value. I got ma790x ud4p + 550BE for £110, unlocked to quad and its great. Don't care if its not as good as an i7, i'm a happy chappy :)

lets face it this thread is dead i would guess everyone that now visits it is only to see and chuckle at the banter.

everyone to their own really my amd rig is perfectly suited to my needs i didn't go for i7 cause it wasn't needed plus i get all my amd, gigabyte and corsair parts about 10% cheaper than OCUK.

i don't think you can really judge the benefits of both systems unless you have owned them both and compared them in a real life day to day scenario not some tech site with lots of facts and numbers and the intel boys vs the amd boys.

Would i try an i7 system yes i would, would i purchase one no i wouldn't for my own and obvious reasons many of which have been posted many times in this very thread

Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology

From a run i done earlier, HT disabled @4ghz

Fritz Chessmark
  • INTEL® Core™ i7 920 @ 4GHz (HT Off) █ █ █ █
  • 24.49
  • 11756
  • INTEL® Core™ i7 920 @ 4GHz (HT On) █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █
  • 30.69
  • 14732
Hyper-Threading Speedup +25.31%

Thanks for that contribution earlier setter, only just got a moment to analyse it, I think it's fair to say Fritz is pretty well optimized for multi-core and judging from your results it seems adding in another four extra *logical* cores results in a net speedup of 25% . . . I would have expected more actually but for someone who is pressed for time and really needs to plough through a ton of data processing then every little helps I guess! :)

I do like Hyper-Threading but it's not something personally I would pay a large premium for as it doesn't benefit me in the tasks I do or the games I play . . . . some people have said it hinders some games and the framerate actually increases once the HT is disabled? . . . can't say that is anything other than rumour though but it makes you wonder, anyway thanks again for the results, that 4.0GHz shot without HT enabled is going to come in handy!

Peace!

i7 is overkill for most users and cheaper systems would suffice for most tasks but that's not the point of the purchase for a lot of people. People like to buy this type of hardware even at a premium and even if the bang for buck maybe lower than other parts. The i7 offers the best performance, overclocks amazingly well and should last longer than lower performing parts in terms of keeping up with other newer components and features.

This thread was always going to be difficult as the 2 CPUs are so vastly different in performance and most would say the i7 was best. If all you do is surf the net, email and game occasionally then obviously the i7 will seem ridiculous.

yes HT is bad in arma2, one of my games of choice :)

You would be suprised how many people think they need it so their new PC isn't laggy . . .

The i7 offers the best performance
Really? . . . it's actually slower in some tests . . . if you care to look closer! :D

This thread was always going to be difficult as the 2 CPUs are so vastly different in performance
Not really, in your personal perception maybe but the only thing that is "vastly different" is the price . . . . awful price/performance ratio and not worth paying unless you can tap that power . . .

To avoid a circular debate with you JeffyB I take it your answer to the O.P is "yes" it is worth the 100%/156% premium . . . you don't need to justify anything more . . . thanks for your contribution and enjoy the weekend!

:OT:

Sorry Wayne, but I just wanted to say how amusing I find the arguments between you and easy, 2 weekends in a row now this thread has been filled with quality entertainment from you guys!!! :D

Hmmm well that's not what I'm here for . . . and there is no arguements, there is only truth and falsehoods . . . :p

There are people in life who think they are knowledgeable but actually know very little or nothing, if I am able to give them a socratic examination they usually end up looking like complete fools . . . . apparently it's quite amusing to watch! . . . the only downside is they usually hate me . . . it's strange because the problem is not the questions or the questioner but with the falsehood of the answers they have been living!

Indeed, so those benchies you mention where the Athlon beats the 920?

Truth or Falsehoods?

The lack of any links or data steers me towards some wayne falsehoods.

easyrider, I could come to your house (with pizza) put a set of benchmarks in front of you on an empty table and you still wouldn't see them! :D

You are not able to see them because you do not want to see them . . . I'm not here to serve you mate, I've done my work now you do yours . . . if you can't find a AMD® Athlon™ II X4 620 for sale on the OcUK shop you have little or no chance to find the results I speak of!
