Not long till carn now! Got a few of my old mates to come along so should be good turn out! Ill be dressed as a troy lee power ranger in the new history kit! Im on call so im trying to get someone to cover me though!
Drats, will need to synchronise and make sure we don't wear the same outfit to the party then!

Looking forward to it, but I have a bad case of the sh!ts at the moment ... need to go buy some "cement pills" to get me settled!

Just had a chance to watch this, brilliant video and fair play to all 4 of them, great trail and great riding.
Would you MTB types recommend Shimano M520's for a beginner?. I have 6620 Ultegras on my road bike and would prefer to have SPD's on the mountain bike too.
Also, what MTB shoes around the £50 mark would you recommend?. Again, I use Shimano RO99's on the road bike and fitting wise I found them to be tighter than the stated size suggests. Is that the case with all Shimano shoes inc MTB ones?. What about Specialized MTB shoes, are they of a "tight fit" too?.

Shoes you'll need to find some that work for your feet. M540's (770 XT's but silver) are comparable to Ultegra on the Road.
Cool. I've just grabbed a pair of M520's on that well known auction site for £23 inc cleats and free delivery. Not a bad price, and they are in white which will go great with my Acid which is red and white.

Too later now, but better build quality on the 540's. 520's should be fine.

Guys, right now I have a Trek 1000Sl (Carbon fork, seat) love the bike to bits. However, how much of a performance gain could I expect from a much better road bike (all carbon fiber, Trek Madone series for instance) - I do mainly longer distances.
Is it worth spending $2kish on a new / used bike?

In America we recognise that a bike fork is singular, no "s" required
If you've got a decent bike the best performance increase is the engine. Although we all like shiney new gear.

The 'engine' is pretty good right now but was just wondering if the lighter and more absorbent ride might make it better.

What increase are you looking for?
A lighter bike is going to go up hills quicker (and that weight includes you and the bike itself); lighter wheels are going to accelerate faster; and a stiffer bike is going to allow for better transfer of power from your to the rear wheel.
Lighter doesn't necessarily mean better.
