I saw Mandelson (the slimey *******) last nite on the BBC just after the exit poll talking about staying in power and that people want a labour government. It makes me sick to think they can linger like a bad smell.

I'm depressed over this result. How can it even be conceivable that Brown and the Labour party have the possibility of staying in power? Something is very wrong with this country and i am counting the days until i leave for New Zealand in 2 years i'm done with this crap hole.

This country is *****d.
As an ex-ex-pat I hate to tell you that it's true the grass is always greener... :D

Having not really cared about politics up until this election, can someone explain to me in simple terms what it means if it stays in this sort of ratio of seats? How does it work? (please dont link me to a bbc explanation, i want simple short answers :p)

No one will have outright claim to be PM, so Lib Dems will need to team up with the Torys and go begging to the Queen to form a government.

I would be very surprised if GB leaves without a very firm push.

He has to stay in anyway, at least until someone else looks like they could win a vote of no confidence.

still 38 constituencies to submit results, so still some margin for things to change..

Thats because you vote for the party.

True, my only response would be to enter a debate about whether we shouldve had an election when gordon came to power. But that's another thread, yes? :p

Labour as a political force in england have been so badly beaten its not funny.

I can see future moves to limit or fully devolve celtic influence over the English parliamentary system.

Voted Liberal Democrat although the poll has been closed, so not updated. A hugely disappointing result :(

I predict that the Liberal Democrats will "work" with the "English" Tories in the national interest; this will probably result in another General Election within 12 months and I suspect that the Liberal Democrats will do still worse there.
As Lord Hailsham once said; the FPTP system is an "elective dictatorship", in that a powerful government can be created with overwhelming Parliamentary power which can usually push through its required legislation - but with only a minority of the country supporting it.

IF the Tories get the remaining seats, they will still be 5 short of an winning majority, and this bastardised system allows Brown to cling on to the vestiges of power on some presidential ego trip.
