It's certainly a compelling argument against not having elections at all :p

yep.

democracy best of a bad bunch. It certainly isn't ideal.

That would happen in any scenario. It doesn't mean that people shouldn't be given the opportunity.

Actually on important, complex decisions. I think we shouldn't be given the choice. But I also think government shouldn't just be able to force such change through either. It should be left to an independent commission, with strict regulations and safeguards.

I can't see Clegg being given home - far too big of a roll for the Conservatives to give up.
Vince is obviously going to get Business (I reckon), it seems like a natural place to put him as there's no hope of him being Chancellor.
Maybe put Clegg in Education or Energy, but also make it clear that he is a key member of the cabinet.

Home Secretary is considered a bit of a poisoned chalice isn't it? Would that be the reason why the Conservatives are prepared to offer the LibDems that? ;)

Brown only gave Alan Johnson the Home Secretary's position because he was perceived to be a threat to Brown's leadership. It must be said AJ didn't do a bad job.

I don't understand this 'votes thrown away comment'

Surely everyones vote counts the same, you vote for who you want to represent you in parliment not for the government.

Just cause the person you wanted didn't win in your area doesn't mean you wasted your vote, just that more people wanted someone else ?

I'm only interested in which party gets into government, it's not much good having a great local MP in parliament if your in prison for some ridiculous thought crime Labour introduced.

I'm quite excited by:

  • Nick Clegg as Home Secretary
  • Vince Cable as Business Secretary
  • Equal sized constitencies
  • Cameron as PM, Hague as Foreign

A little thing called evidence of effectiveness and need in lawmaking?

That was a ninja edit ;)

The problem I have with that is that who is to say by which criteria that will be judged? We all know how powerful big business is these days, how invasive it is. I wouldn't trust the individuals tasked with carrying out that role not to be influenced either overtly or covertly. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Or more realistically a compelling argument for small government that is not able to legislate or tax based on the opinion of the public...
Well it's interesting you raise that (albeit completely unsurprising) because on something like a voting system, there really is quite a compelling case for letting 'opinion' decide isn't there, as it doesn't have a great deal of 'rights' implications, and it really comes down to a bunch of competing systems and the people who are entitled to vote, being allowed to decide how they want their view to be expressed.
