*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Ah. Mine came in a white box from Vodafone and other than the SIM toolkit, I believe it is very standard. Is there a way to tell whether a gold card is needed or not?

Hmm sim toolkit is in mine too, I believe it's a standard thing anyway though. not sure how to check!

And there was me thinking you would say "Hold this on boot up and look for x and if it is y then you are good to go!"

Disappointed to say the least... ;)

khaaan you wouldn't be the first on here to root your desire(just the first of the group thats discussing it doing it at the moment), at least one person has already done it but I can't remember the name of that person off the top of my head.

from what I've read on modaco you can use the cooked rom zip file rather than the rootupdate zip file at the stage in the root process where you flash rootupdate, would save some time having to re-enter recovery and flashing the 'new' rom.

I'm tempted as well but I'm currently holding off, don't want to end up with a £400 brick(I bought it from cpw on orange payg, tho I'm using my o2 sim in it as I'm on the 12months simplicity for smartphones £15/month contract).

tonyveb if you're on 1.15.405.4 firmware then you don't need a goldcard, if it's like 1.10.xxxx then you need the goldcard. also from what I've read you get a certain error on step one if you need a goldcard and you're not using one, tho I can't remember off the top of my head what it is.

Wonder if someone could help, my desire has all of a sudden starting sorting my text messages in a weird way.

Before it used to show as a conversation like

Me: Blah

Someone: Blah to you to

Me: Indeed

But now its showing what i say below what the reply is?

Someone: Blah to you to

Me: Indeed

Me: Blah

Any ideas how to sort the conversation displaying correctly?

Sounds like a particular message in a thread got deleted perhaps, stock messaging app?

I'd recommend Handcent over the stock app too btw as it offers lots more options and is smoother all round.

Thanks fowler002, would be good to hear from whoever it was that has rooted to confirm the process!

Silly question, but how do I access the web on my Orange Desire? If I select the "Internet" icon it just says I cant connect to it unless im on the Orange GPRS, Im using WiFi at home.

Is the rooting process any different if you need a gold card? I've already made a gold card for flashing the generic rom, is that the only difference in the procedure?

I rooted a few weeks ago (as soon as i could), and needed to do the Gold Card (but still had one from my Hero, so all was good).

It's not as straightforward as the Hero, but still simple enough providing you can read and follow instructions :p

Currently running a custom rom from the kitchen from Modaco, and it certainly seems to help the battery life (get two days no problem at the moment)

No messages have been deleted, I even tested it from another persons desire side by side and it seems to post the replies above all my sent messages?

Well there's nothing really to worry about, I don't think you can brick your phone by updating to a Modaco Rom that is a confirmed and working version (like the one with the kitchen).

Bricking occurs more often when you try and flash a N1 ROM onto a Desire and so on.

Get it done Khaaan! ;) :p

Im still in too minds if i should root or not. I want to root and put on a custom ROM.

But the Hero was easy to do, this seems abit harder and there are to many threads on XDA-Devs about issues with it bricking phones.

Im scared! lol

That's pretty much all from people who don't have a clue how to use terminal / command prompt... if you're comfortable in using it then it's highly unlikely you'll have a problem :P

Or people trying to flash the wrong thing...

It's still unlocked/unbranded tho ;)

Ive got my Orange sim in mine from o2

Really? That's strange! I thought only unbranded phones came in official HTC boxes!

Robboftw , going halfsies on the £9.99 seems like a good plan, I could always send you a zip too of your chosen "bake" :p

*edit*

It looks like (going by the latest posts in the kitchen thread) that people using the kitchen to exclude stock apps (friend stream etc) are getting force close issues and boot loops and so on so I think I will opt out of the kitchen and use a pre-baked rom once rooted ¬_¬

I could settle with that setup until a 2.2 variant is released. I really want a complete Android stock rom without any Sense-ified additions.

Mine was t-mobile branded and locked in a white HTC box :)

9.99 for the kitchen is a little OTT imo... I'm all for supporting the developers - but that seems a little steep for what it is...

Look on XDA developers - I'm pretty sure I remember seeing someone has created a "nexus experience" rom... or something to that effect which is bland 2.1 without sense...

But then there's going to be a bland 2.2 port to the desire in the next couple of days from modaco :)

Hmmm

I'll root first but not flash a new rom anytime soon yet :p

Rooting gives me access to the apps I used to use on the Magic and of course MyBackup Pro opens up many new options for backup and restore so that will do me for the time being I suppose until a FroYo stock port is out!

I really do not want SenseUI and its associated bits on my phone :p

if you are planning on rooting your phone then you don't need to flash it with a generic rom first, you just need the goldcard in the phone when you begin the process. the thread on modaco gives you the step by step guid, if you follow that you should be ok.
