One of the most interesting threads I've ever seen in GD and one of the few that deserves a 5 star rating without question. Can't even begin to imagine the amount of time and dedication it takes to get this good at something.

Not really, I have parts all over the place, even at this stage would take a couple of hours to assemble it all. I really want to plow on with new stuff and then go over everything at the end and do the details and fitting together.

Difficult to estimate the thickness of the shoulder bits so quite a bit of guess work here.

I was searching for a while to find what I could use for the big gear teeth in the shoulders. After counting teeth and measuring how big mine will be I settled on the teeth being Mod 1 pitch which makes it easier. Technobots.co.uk have a lot of parts for making your own battle robots and projects and things, they had (bizarrely) some Mod 1 track. I bought a load of this.....

.... and set to work, milling the edges and back off it then heating it up and bending it to shape. Then make some little T pieces to bolt to the circles and hold it in place

Good thing about aluminium is it wont tarnish over time so it will be nice and shiny(with polishing) for years to come! Theres just something about machined metal that is irresistable to me lol , and no doubt you too haha!

I bet the person who came up with this creation has done the exact same thing with you, made it from a drawing and just experimented on the way to get the best possible result.

I swear there could be a market for these types of things, solid metal sculptures(of all your fav characters), theres a certain element of grandure of them sitting on your shelf that would attract attention whenever anyone came to visit!

Damn nice project, can't wait to see it finished! I'd love to do something similar, don't have the money or the space for a workshop at the moment tho Couple of years and I might have the money tho, I'm sure you'll be a source of inspiration!

How are you planning on finishing it? I'd say don't paint it, anodise would look cooler! Although it would depend what grade alloy you've used, some aren't great for anodising, what have you made it out of?

Not sure about the finishing yet, just trying to get as much done as possible first.

center parts of the disks

drilled a hole, then made another piece that slots in the top, this will be the cap.

milled some 3mm slots at 90 degrees to allow the triangles to fit in.

turned the cap down and recessed it so the dome can sit in the groove

cut the triangles to size and mounted it all up only to hold it against the picture and see its way too tall!

So cut it down, and the triangles too, this is much better.

...make 2 of them obviously

they aren't a tight fit in the slots so I have drilled a tiny hole in the circle under the edge of the triangles and then drilled into the trianges and tapped them M2 and screwed them down from the underneath, this was a bit fiddly.

and the other one too, the top caps screw into place.

thanks, thats why I have to keep posting pictures, everyones praise gives me the motivation I need.

beats me, It wasnt like I woke up one day and could do it, it was more over a few months. I've always had ideas of making things in my head, I dont mean "i'd like to make this, or i'd like to make that" more like I can look at something and work out how its been put together. All I had to do was make the step up to actually making it for real, it has helped me doing it this way as I make each part in my mind before I cut any metal, thats why I dont have to make a cardboard moke up except for the very complex parts I cant imagine.

Just a quick question, when finished how big will the screen/face panel be?

just wondering cause it could make a awesome dock on mini vid player, put a usb slot in the front behind the nuke panel and iam sure theres plenty of room for the internals of a handheld media player inside.

you sir get a gold star! First person in 4 forums to mension the screen in the head. Now what makes you think I would go to the trouble to make his head open and have a little lcd screen in there that would be a lot of work.

I will do the Main right arm first, then the mini gun arm, then the remaining 2 arms (he has 4 arms). I will probably end up making everything, we'll see.
