Samsung Galaxy i5700 'Portal'

I've seen loads of videos on making stands like the gogostand out of card with downloadable templates etc :)

I even saw one where a guy made a stand from 2 credit cards (think they were free top-up cards) slotted together.

Cool, thanks for that, might give that a go as well :p.

Although I would love to be able to get a stand like the one khaaaaaaaan has for his desire, looks very professional and neat, plus very sturdy looking especially when he pushes the buttons in.
 
Has anyone got a case for the galaxy?

I've just ordered a silicone skin type case.

I was going to get a pouch but think they look a bit girly and takes a while to answer phone with them by the time you get it out of your pocket :(
 
Never seen much point in cases, if you take care of your phone you wont get a scratch on it anyway.
 
Has anyone rooted and flashed different firmwares onto there I5700 without any problems at all?

Thinking about doing it to my I5700 as we probably won't get any future updates at all now due to samsungs new mobiles and OS etc. but I am scared xxxxxxxx of bricking my mobile :p.

Plus could someone explain to me what exactly rooting your mobile does, how you do it, what are the advantages and disadvantages of it etc? I have had a look at leshaks guide for doing this but I am completely lost with all these terms :p like "this is only the kernel, not the full ROM", don't have a clue what the difference is. but then it says "now to flash", does he basically mean now to root.

Also how do you flash different firmwares onto the I5700, and again what are the advantages of it and disadvantages of it? Is it really much better than stock firmware? Having a look at this firmware of leshaks:

I have had a look at all the guides and leshaks work etc. but it still seems really complicated and unfortunately I don't really understand all of the steps either :p, so I would be very grateful if someone could explain the whole thing in easier terms for me :D.

I'm pretty sure the only way you can brick the phone is if you don't follow the instructions properly or flash a firmware with incompatible radio onto the phone.
 
I also don't get what the delay is, either way I flashed 2. 1 on tonight, liking it a lot. The only problem I'm having atm is I don't know what market I'm running as there seem to be very few paid apps on it.

Last night I read this thread after a few beers, and all of a sudden I was inspired to make (a temporary) stand. 2 old credit cards...

A bit of either wood work or metal work, I think it could work out well, but it would be no doubt cheaper if I just bought one. But after seeing the kaloer clock app, I needed something there and then to use my phone as a decent alarm clock.

And I didn't measure anything, so it's feels like wonky table. Do I waste my time fixing it, (making a decent version) or should I just buy a stand?

*edit* please excuse the crude diagram! But I was worse for wear, and it seams to work for the moment

I flashed & rooted my phone 2hours after unboxing it and it went fine.

Providing you read the threads on samdroid properly you shouldn't have any problems.
Also make sure you understand the process before even attempting it.

The only problem I've had so far is when trying the new leshak firmware where it resulted in a boot loop. I had to clear the data/cache and then it was fine again.

There are people who have bricked their phones tho, seems to mainly be where they have tried changing the boot logo and it's been too big filesize. then they can't even get into recovery.

What Do I Lose Having Root

1. The ability to accept OTA updates (well, you can but you would lose root, so its been made so they get denied)
2. The sense that someone else controls your phone
3. The need to sit in an Android chat channel asking how to get root
4. The need for a stupid useless "File Manager" that lets you see filenames but almost nothing else.
5. The ability to have a knowledgeable conversation with a T-Mobile rep about your phone. (Ask one of them to spell root for you)

Thanks for the reply, yeah I have read all the guides etc. but still don't quite understand it fully, I find it fairly complicated this whole rooting, flashing etc. :p. Scared xxxxxxx of bricking my mobile lol.

Yeah bought the mobile on the 3 network so it came preloaded with 2.1 thankfully in some ways lol.

Not really at the minute, waiting to see what exactly samsung are going to be doing with the I5700 with regards to updates especially the 2.2 (froyo), if will get that, doubt that we will though, and I doubt that we will get any sort of update again after 2.1 is officially released by samsung. Should find out sometime this week though I think, using this site for all the updates on what's going on etc.:

Plus another reason why I am looking at rooting and flashing different firmwares onto my I5700 is because apparently the version of 2.1 I have is the first experimental version and there are like 10 newer versions of the 2.1 out now, which have apparently improved overall speed, fixed bugs etc. Found this all on a website but can't remember what it was though and people where saying that they couldn't believe that samsung and 3 were shipping these mobiles with the first experimental 2.1 version on it.

And I am also hoping that there will be a firmware out which will use the full potential of the I5700 hardware, the hardware capabilities, which haven't been implemented yet are:
1. The Galaxy Spica has 256 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM. But only 146 was made visible to the OS.
2. It has a FM capable chip BCM4325, but was not implemented.
3. QT5480 chip is multitouch capable but was not implemented

And plus I would like to remove all of the 3 branded stuff from my mobile as it's taking up the RAM and internal storage (using around 30Mb of my RAM and plus I can't uninstall my space, facebook and some other stuff which I never use at all).

When I got the mobile it was extremely laggy with the pantheon launcher, wasn't really that smooth at all, but since I installed the launcherPRO beta, it has been so smooth and fast, so, happy with the way it's running now for the time being :p.

Also has anyone noticed any weird bugs with the battery meter at all, when I had the battery time lite application installed which shows the percentage of battery left, when it hits 50% remaining, the battery meter on the top right of the notification area would show around 4/5 of battery remaining and once the battery time lite application hits 50% it will stay there for ages just like the battery meter on the top right staying at like 4/5 for ages and then all of a sudden it drops straight to 30% and the battery meter on the top right drops down to around 3/5 sometimes but most of the time it drops to 15% and the battery meter on the top right shows 1/5 and is red and comes up saying you need to plug your charger in.

I uninstalled the battery application though as I am pretty sure that it uses a fair bit of the battery.

But yet when I plug the charger in it shows that its charging from 50% and not 30% or 15% (you need to have the pattern lock instead of the slide lock to see the charge percentage).

I have tried draining the battery completely and then charging it fully again to reset the battery indicator, but it hasn't fixed it at all.

Although the battery life is very good, can get 2 days out of it, main uses would be loads of texting, few games and quite a lot of web browsing and just messing about with it :p, brightness is set to half when indoors and full when out in the sunshine, auto sync is set to automatic and hotmail is set to refresh every hour with weather widget refreshing every 3 hours and the 3G watchdog refreshing every 30 minutes but I only get that kind of battery life when it is connected to my wifi network at my house all the time instead of 3G, if I am connected to the 3G network instead of the wifi and use it roughly the same way I can only get about 1 day and a bit until I get a message saying that I need to plug in the charger.

Yeah I was thinking about making a stand as well but can't really be arsed :p.

I think you can install it on unrooted, just get the apk file and install :confused:

Think there are a lot of people installing it on the desire without root.
 
I get something similar to that with the Battery Graph app, it only seems to have a handfull of intervals. 100%, 80%, 50%, 30%, 15% and 10%. I thought it was a problem with the app :(

Yeah for me it seems to be 100%, 90% 80%, 70%, 50%, 30% and 15% when using the battery application but for just the default (battery meter top right) it seems to be 100%, 90%, around 70% I think, 30% and then just a small red bar probably meaning 15%. Really wish samsung would fix the battery indicator and show more accurate readings, but that ain't going to happen :(. So fed up with it showing like half a green bar and then all of a sudden later on it just drops straight to 15% and brings up the "you need to plug your charger in" pop up.
 
Has anyone else noticed something strange about their Portal's touch screen?

If I hold the phone in my hand it works perfectly, but if I rest it on some surfaces, I.E. the sofa I can no longer drag or swipe it registers the swipe as a touch and usually starts up what ever is under the start of the swipe. Clicks become unreliable too.

Seems a little weird to me, works if I put i on my leg or arm but not on the floor etc.

Anyone know a reason for this?

Sidenote: 2.1 makes this phone so much nicer and a much better bargain.
