Generally speaking muslim women are hideous to look at, so its kinda doing us a favour at the moment.

However, we are not an islamist state, so I think a ban would be the right thing to do, even if it means some of the horror shows are on display.

As ever this is just my opinion, based upon my observations of these veiled characters.

I don't like the idea of banning any form of clothing, but I also don't like the idea of isolating people from society because of their sex, or of treating men as mindless animals, or of treating women as bizarrely fragile, or of giving some people a free pass through almost all security...and a full-face veil does all of those things.

I'm torn between 'ban' and 'don't like but a ban is the wrong approach'. I definitely want them gone.

except it doesn't as they will b e asked to lift the veil as they go through security.

Personally because I'm living in fear of ALL Muslims blowing me up and i don't understand their culture or religion, I vote to ban anything in the name of security or equality based on western principles.

Thats bullcrap. Loads wher i work.

I predict the veil will phase out naturally in this country. I see it already.

You are wrong. Some Muslim women wear it out of choice. Some are pushed into it by social pressure. Some are coerced into it. Some are outright forced into it.

You are actually wrong. Nowhere in the holy Quran is this made obligatory on any Muslim woman. My mum/ aunt/ sister are all Muslim women and do not wear the veil (it is up to them). Get your facts right.

If your parents/ peers/ social pressure says a young woman shouldn't walk around with a mini skirt/ top showing cleavage? What would you expect her to do. It is not an excuse to FORCE them not to wear the veil.

Covering your face has particular connotations that the examples you give do not.

Now you are contradicting yourself. If you really believe that all Muslim women who wear the veil do so from free choice (which is wrong, but it's what you're arguing), then you believe that they are specifically targetting and further alienating themselves. Alienation from society is what completely concealing yourself is for, especially your face. According to your argument, they want to be alienated from society and freely choose to be so, to the extent of explicitly and physically seperating themselves from society.

Besides, it's inherently sexist and insulting. Against both sexes. I'll ignore anyone dressed like that unless they're asking for my help.

I didn't contradict myself. YOU are targeting and alienating them by forcing rules on them. In what way is she alienated? Can she not talk? Can she not go out and shop/ pay bills/ if I'm happy interacting with someone with a veil on why can't you?? They are not physically separated from society in any way..

I give up. Refuse to participate in conversation with people who are rude, inconsiderate and anti-Islamic. Don't expect me to pop in this thread again.

Muslim women wear the veil out of choice, it is not forced on them.

Oh right. You mean until they want to get a job and are told to remove it, when all of a sudden they say it's mandatory under islamic law. I'd say it's more brainwashing than choice. Also makes me laugh how a lot of these musilm women go to fashion shops and buy expensive, trendy clothes. What's the point when they're hidden under a massive black tea cloth, lol?

.. you are further alienating muslim women

Oh no, no, no, they do that very well by themselves, they don't need any assistance.

I really don't understand why it bothers people so much.

How is it rude?

It's like wearing sunglasses, or a dust mask, hat, etc... you take them off when you speak to someone.

As much as I hate religion, I don't believe we should be told what we can and cannot wear.

No offense Efour but I share your ignorance. I would be lying if I said I didn't get ever so slightly twitchy around full on Islamic dressed individuals. I'll admit I'm a noob for being prejudice I can only put that down to how Islamic extremists are portrayed in the media, almost everything trivial involving the middle east is dramatized in the news.

Got it in one.

Edit: after reading Tank's reply above, I think/hope I've read your post correctly...!

this is not an islamic country, they should respect our values, we should not pander to their intolerance.

- a ban is extreme, but i don't see how there would be any other way of stopping this.

Maybe many western people simply find it an affront to their way of life in the same way a bikini would be viewed in Pakistan?

hear hear, and i bet you aren't DM wearing skinheads with swastikas tattooed on your heads like these numpties have everyone believe. Logic trumps politically correctness every day of the week!

No no you didn't, you put it quite fairly, unlike some other people who may well have sounded racist

Thats why I worded my opinion as best as possible in my post, as in threads like this it can get very heated and people can easly get misunderstood. I like living in a mixed raced/ mixed cultured country and wanting the ban on the veil is purely down to fear not hatred.

No offense Efour but I share your ignorance..

I think that's what most of this is.. In the knowledge sense of the word, rather than the arrogance sense of the word of course :)

I think a less negative portrayal in the media would have a massive effect on the public perception of Muslims.
