Ordered a viper green scirocco!

You can't compare leasing a car to renting a house.

You missing the point, but it doesn't matter.

He may be wasting money, it's his decision but at the end of the day Most percentage of people do the same thing.

if he enjoys the vehicle it being a 1.4, that im happy for him.

Sounds like a lot of money for a car that I reckon won't take you very long to get bored with.

Still, I love the Rocco <3

I just feel a bit sorry for him, when he went into the dealer with perfectly good (and sensible) intentions and they have basically bent him over and not used any lube.

It's not a life changing mistake, but one that will probably end up regrettable.

LOLz.. buying a £12K humdrum golf from a dealer is 'sensible' now is it..

People's ability to see everything as black and white is comical...

He'd spend more pm on a £12K golf, and have almost nothing to show at the end of it, as it's probably over inflated by £2K, making it a £10K car to most people, after 3 years it'll be worth £4K or so, he'd have spent £50pm more to buy it outright, making nearly £2k extra in monthly payments over the term, leaving him £2K approx at best at the end, and have a 5 or 6 year old humdrum golf.. The thread would be the same lolfest if he came on here and said "I'm spending £12K on a humdrum golf from a main dealer"..

And also, if I got a 335i for £25K I'd be lauded as making a great purchase, Yet it will lose me £12K+ over 3 years in depreciation alone with masively higher running costs, and I no doubt, as with most people, I'd largely just be going from A-B with it, so in actual fact the only justification for having my wallet raped even more then the OP in financial terms is how the car felt to drive, or how the indicator stalks turned me on, which to some would be evern more idiotic if they didn't get their jollies in that way.

Perspective people.. perspective..

Oh, and I do personally see a more rewarding car to drive/performance etc as better for me.. I just don't ridicule those that dont...

As for people saying he should have got a cheaper car, why settle for something that you won't be happy with. I'm stuck with a car I don't like because of making that choice

This attitude, imo, is what gets people into problems, you get dealt a certain hand in life and have to play it, not leverage yourself up and fail spectacularly.

I'm not particularly thrilled with my current car, but doesn't mean I should go finance up to my eyeballs to buy something "shiny and fast".

A lot of your maths don't add up. I've just had a look at my local dealer's stock and 12k gets you a 2010 1.4 S Golf. Find me a 3 year old one of those for anywhere near £4000. If anything a 3 year old Golf should be cheaper right now as there was a new shape released in the meantime but you won't find one anywhere near 4 grand.

Also you seem to forget that his PCP will require a deposit of a few grand - have you taken that into consideration or just gone for a 12k loan in your example?

If I get bored later I'll do the maths properly rather than make it up. ;)

Well put.

Nothing wrong with wanting something nice, but live within your means and don't screw yourself over financially because you want something flashy and new. That new feeling will also wear off very very quickly (Deja Vu anyone) ;)

I was thinking more like for like..
OP said:
BUT with the 1.4 TSI 122ps model I pay a bit more than the golf but have a BRAND new rocco:D
e.g. 1.4TSI, my local dealer has 2010's 1.4 Golf 1.4TSI for around £17K..

But yes, I'm sure my maths may be a little bit out, however, you end up with different things at the end of 3 years, so it's not apples for apples, you have to compromise somewhere to get your alternatives, which is all kind of moot..

Paying £300pm (if he can afford it), and netting nothing at the end of it isn't heinous at the end of the day, he had a nice enough 'new' car to drive around in for the 3 years, might not be my/your cup of tea, but some 'reward' is in having shiny/new things..

WOW I made this thread yesterday?!

Interesting to hear everyone's views on this, I signed for the car on tuesday not sure how long cooling off would therefore be.

Seeing as someone nearly guessed right, my monthly will be £275 with gap insurance (£270 without)

I didn't realise PCP was hated so much here! My mum is financially cautious yet rotates her new cars this way, didn't think about it too much (enough) perhaps.

Yes the ' I can haz shiny new car' factor was massive and can't really defend myself there. A golf would have REALLY bored me, if the rocco bores me by three yrs time then so be it, i'm sure I will have been enjoying the car far more than another golf.

So to summarise, people think:

a) get a loan out, buy your own car
b) can't afford it, don't get it, be sensible?

If it was my own car I would love to have lowered and remapped it in theory but in practice i'd have chickened out so the modding side of things is no different from me renting.

.

this is motors

second in number of posts only to GD.

As for you question, only you know if ****ing £275 a month into the wind is sensible or not. yes you get a nice shiny new car every 3 years if you continually rent. But the moment you stop you end up with nothing to show for it all.

You've got a Golf in a pretty frock with a crap engine.

Sorry :p

What makes you think you've got any kind of cooling off period?
You signed a credit agreement "on site" so you don't have any.
Cooling Off periods are for when you sign a credit agreement "off-site" - if somebody comes to your house etc.

There really is no reason why they cannot now enforce your purchase.
