Winter 2010/2011

I think if it starts snowing and freezing over again I might have to find out how to have my house registered as an exam centre. Getting to the one January exam I had this year was a pain.

I would love to have a snowy, cold winter. I do love the cold weather, as it is much better being uncomfortably cold rather than uncomfortably warm. It also makes a cup of tea pack a bit more punch! One thing I will not welcome is the central heating in my flat breaking and the engineer not arriving for 10 days. That was ludicrously cold :(

London wasn't that bad. Basingstoke can to a stand still for a couple of days, took me over hour & half to get home from work and live 15mins max drive away.

On one hand, it's annoying having the locks on my car freeze solid, and having to drive to work on poorly maintained slippery roads.

On the other hand, it's nice to have the better visibility at night that snow brings, and it looks awesome. Those winter clothes finally have some purpose, and nothing feels better than wrapping up warm in hat, gloves, jumper, coat, and an extra pair of socks, and then heading out into the cold.

Furthermore I can turn all the fans down on my PC, watch my cat play in the snow, and hot cups of tea tend to taste much better.

I would love to have a freezing cold snowy winter and roasting hot sunshine summer. At least we know what is coming instead of going out in a tshirt & shorts for a summers day out, only for it to turn overcast half way through the day then dump it down with rain and go cold.

It was great in oz/other counteries to know that it would be hot all day and not bother about it turning foul

Summers used to be for sun and winters for cold. Now its all over the place and we dont really get either

Where does it say in that article if its a good winter or not?

The gulf stream is what keeps us warm, work it out for yourself

TIP( look at map and see at what latitude we sit at compared to Canada/Russia)

Images of The Day After Tomorrow flashed in my head. The disruption of major ocean currents is no small thing. The climate ramifications are massive, worldwide.

The Gulf Stream is what keeps the east coast of the U.S. as well as Britain and Europe more temperate, compared to what they would be without this warm current passing by.

Now, current temperature measurements for the Gulf Stream on the Atlantic Front (from 76 to 47 meridian) now appears to be about 10 degrees Celsius cooler than it was this time last year. Consequently, a direct causality nexus has now been established, between the stall of the Gulf Loop Current and this new temperature drop in the Gulf Stream on the Atlantic Front.

For this reason, the focus of Zangari’s research is presently centered on finding signs of a return to the former natural equilibrium of the Gulf. Again, he stresses making predictions (pessimistic or optimistic alike) because “these phenomena are unpredictable because they are ruled by strong non-linearities.”

Nonetheless, we must must ponder the question: What does this new nexus portend for our future? To that, Zangari says “we can affirm that this system (the Gulf Stream) is changing in an unpredictable way, which may produce serious consequences on planetary scale.”

hope it snows.

Its perfect when you can go to an empty car park and just slide about in a car that normaly wouldnt slide about :D

saw 2 young guys doing this in morrisons carpark last year while i was shopping. they went past me about 3 times and the driver had a massive smile on his face.

Winter 2010/2011

December: Chilly, some wintry weather around.

A chilly but dry start to December with some dry and bright weather around, but also some rain - amounts of which are not expected to give cause for concern. Through mid-month, high pressure consolidates, so expect a run of dry weather, which will combine chilly and bright daytimes, with clear and crisp nights, leading to sustained frost and fog activity, some of which will persist throughout the day, predominantly inland and in more so valley locations. During the final segment of December, unsettled weather chiefly affecting the higher ground across the eastern and north-eastern side of the UK, and possibly higher ground pushing westward for a time, may well deliver a White Christmas.

January: Mainly dry start, wintry weather developing.

A cold but dry start to January, quite raw at times, with a continuation of dry and bright conditions by day, with some sharp night frosts, particularly inland. By mid-month, with the cold theme continuing, sleet and snow showers will become increasingly more widespread, with moderate falls of snow possible, which have the potential to cause disruption - particularly for eastern and upland regions. PWS will continue to assess how the detail of the expected snowfall develops, but confidence is high that this eventuality will occur. January ends with dry and bright conditions alternating with periods of wintry weather, with the north and northeast again most likely to experience the worst of the conditions, with the south and west seeing more of a rain/sleet combination for the most part.

February: Bitterly cold month, wintry weather.

Another largely cold start to another month, with the ongoing threat of wintry conditions, in the form of organised bands of rain, sleet, and snow, interspersed with drier and brighter weather. Through mid-month, the likelihood and confidence of more widespread and disruptive snowfall increases, most likely once again to the north and east, with for a time, the south and west affected too, and some level of disruption can be expected. PWS will continue to monitor this segment of the forecast. By late month, although the cold conditions show signs of receding somewhat, further wintry weather especially to the north and east cannot be ruled out, with the south and west more likely to see a rain/sleet mix.

Oodles of snow this year please. Thoroughly enjoyed the daily morning lottery of will they or wont they be running (trains) into London after slip-sliding my way to the station. I love the winter and any excuse to get kitted out and head out into the cold. Also have moved so am now too far away from work to find any other means of getting in if the trains aren't running! :D

*rubs hands with glee* Can't wait for winter, absolutley despise the heat of summer, so 4 months of nice cold weather is just perfect.
