What's the best albums that have been released this year?

For me, it's been Mark Ronson & the Business Intl - Record Collection. Great mix of retro sounding tunes with some nice beats and plenty of hooks.

Was Two Dancers by Wild Beasts this year? If so, that.

If not I'm struggling a bit, and would probably say Contra by Vampire Weekend - not a great album, but it is good, and it hasn't been a year of outstanding music. Delphic's album probably deserves a look in as well.

A bit of nostalgia from me. I have two albums:

The Promise – Bruce Springsteen. A compilation of unreleased songs from the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions. It’s been a long time coming and is one of his best.

The Union – Elton John and Leon Russell. Elton John going back to where he belongs and Leon doing what he does best. The two were made for each other, it’s just superb.

At the moment I can’t choose between them.

Two Dancers was 2009 I think but it was a steller album. Best I have heard this year is an album by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse called "dark night of the soul".

I disagree with the above, whilst Eminem's album had moments of genius, it still has quite a few meh tracks.

Personally I really enjoyed and am still enjoying Arcade Fire - Suburbs and Alter Bridge - AB III

I actually can't think of any mind blowing albums of this year to be honest. I'm sure something will hit me soon that will make me think 'ah yes I enjoyed that'.

Some of the albums I've enjoyed this year:

The Blood of Heroes - selftitled
IAMX - Dogmatic Infidel Comedown Ok
Voicians - Escape
Pendulum - Immersion
Trentemoller - Into The Great Wide Yonder
Cyanotic - The Medication Generation
Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Feeder - Renegades
:wumpscut: - Siamese Studies
BT - These Hopeful Machines
Moonitor - To The Past From The Future In The Present
Squarehead - Voltage Controlled Body Music

But the best?

Jamiroquai - Rock Dust Light Star, astonishing return from them.

I can't honestly think of a single thing this year!

That could mean one of two things, in my old age of 24, I have lost touch with popular music;

OR,

It was all so bad and instantly forgettable.

If you havn't heard a good album this year its no ones fault but you own. Further to this, if you are relying on the album charts to direct you to great albums then you are likely to be disappointed.

psysichull, I think you have answered your own question there. The only time I listen to popular music is to remind myself how **** it generally is. You just have to listen to different genres and listen to other peoples suggestions.

I was somewhat disappointed with it, though all the tracks were of a high standard none of them really had any wow factor about them unlike previous albums.

That's the main reason I made this thread was to get some new bands to listen to.

Haha, yeah I was gonna say that these threads are some of the best places to find new music to listen to. My comments were more directed at the chap saying that there wasnt any good music or he was out of touch with pop.

I have nabbed a few of the albums mentioned already. I have never understood why people follow some popular bands so much and just wait for their new album to be released. I listen to music all day and get bored after a while so need something new. Theres about 60 years of music to trawl through if you only look at pop, rock, reggae so I can't see the fascination with new music so much.

Just got into some neil young recently; its always a joy to find new music from yesteryear. Especially when you find they have a nice long back catalogue.

I haven't heard Jamiroquai's album yet to be fair, I've been abroad since August so any albums released since then have passed me by.

From the albums I have heard, though, I'm with Simulatorman - there hasn't been anything wonderful this year.

Shamikebab - how's Feeder's latest? Is it a return to the days of Echo Park and Polythene, or is it more moany drivel?

EDIT: Ooh, forgot about I Am Kloot's Sky at Night. Decent album this year :)

It's very raw, definitely closer to Echo Park and Polythene than anything they've done since but it's a lot louder than those two. Was really good live as well!

Just remembered a few others:

Iris - Blacklight
Eskmo - selftitled
Pure Reason Revolution - Hammer and Anvil
Sonoio - Blue
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross - The Social Network
Combichrist - Never Surrender
Front Line Assembley - Improvised.Electronic.Device
The Birthday Massacre - Pins & Needles
Ratatat - LP4

Only other stand out album for me this year is Miike Snow, though technically out end of last year. Only got into them through Mark Ronson.

I'm exactly the same this year.
I did make my own version of the Iron Maiden album where I cut the tracks up.
Disturbed - Asylum wasn't too bad.
