Is McDonalds in decline in Britain?

Just been thinking lately, that it seems like the golden arches are in something of a retreat at the moment.

In my local town, Durham, the big McDonalds closed down about 6 years or so ago, despite a seemingly always busy counter and a stream of 6th form students and shoppers to keep them busy.

I was recently in Stockton on Tees town centre, and due to the large rolled up rug I was carrying, needed something easily held for lunch. Admittedly, McD barely passes as food, but hey, at least its hot and quick.

Except they're now closed down there as well!

Durham I could perhaps understand, but Stockton is hardly health capital of the UK, and given the North-Easts' reputation for unhealthy lifestyles and a liking of fast food, surely the great McDonalds could survive around here?

But it seems not. Are McDonalds closing down in other towns? Are they being pushed out to motorway services where rents are cheaper, or is it just that people are sick of a largely uninspiring menu of not very well presented, and no longer very cheap 'food'?

Personally, if I fancy a burger and I'm in a rush, Burger king will get my money every time, because at least their burgers taste pretty good. But there isnt always one around when I want one.

The one in Stockton high street is finished?

I've not been to Stockton in about 10 years though so quite a bit's probably changed.

If they're in decline, they're not doing a very good job of it around here. There are four of them within 5 miles of my house.

Hope so. It really is the lowest of the low. I'd rather eat a kebab!

I've only ever use McDonald's out of conveniance and every time I swear never again. It tastes of nothing.

Nope in Barnstaple there are 2, and now one is open 24/7 and one is open 24 hours for Friday and Saturday. No decline around here really. And with the choice I would go to McDonalds over BK or Wimpy.

I've not actually eaten in there since the kids were little (~15 years ago), the only things I've ever went in for since then is the coffee. The one saving grace.

Yup - one closed in Blackpool last year.

A planned build in Cleveleys was canned and a Witherspoons opened instead.

McDonalds has seen excellent growth in the UK recently. It's Burger King that have been struggling by all accounts.

McDonalds is maybe one of ‘the’ worst mass produced lowest of the low garbage foods you could possibly shove down your throat and I can see a McDonalds from the top floor of the office I work in.

They are everywhere in Northampton, its hard to go a few miles without seeing a shopping centre, retail park or some place with a McDonalds. I don’t think they are in decline, but I wish they were.

Honestly can’t remember the last time I had a McDonalds. Understand many do enjoy the food so each to their own I guess….

Occasionally I will buy chips from MacDonalds, I'm talking once or twice a year, when I get a real craving for salt. Other then that...yuck.

There is still one in Stockton from what I recall in Portrack Lane Ind Est plus it's not really that far from Teesside Park either which has all the decent-ish shops. I would guess it's more Stockton High Street dying a death than McDonalds as there is nearly nothing there and anything you do want is normally in the aforementioned Teesside Park.

Durham centre has never really stuck me as Mcdonalds terriorty ether, I'm amazed the Burger King there is still open whenever I've been in Durham that place has been empty.

The only thing i like from the big M is the Crunchy McFlurry. I have no problems with seeing its demise should that happen.

However i looked yesterday and the company is worth about $80 billion US based on amount of shares and current share price. So it can't be doing too badly.

It's Burger King that have been struggling by all accounts.

This i can only explain by it being more expensive. But then I feel full after eating there unlike McDonalds.
