*** The Official ATI Radeon HD 6970 & 6950 Reviews, Discussion and Overclocking Thread ***

Yea, so genuine question here.. What happened guys? People were stating huge and impressive things for these cards and they have turned out to be a bit of a damp squib. Were people lying? Making things up?

What went wrong?
Yep I would say all of that & a lot more ;) I knew once pricing leaked it would be like this pretty obvious which is why they telegraphed the pricing in advance ;)

ATI obviously stoked it as they knew the retail channel's would be full of stock so had to create demand/excitement somehow !!!

Gibbo said he has sold 250 units so far but he also said he had over 1000 so I would expect prices on these to drop a bit as there is going to be a lot of cards unsold methinks once the initial rush has died down ;)

The good news is that the consumer gets cheaper cards & Nvidia may even drop a bit from the GTX570 to kick in the pressure ;) ATI can only win on pricing now if they could afford to get these down to £200 & £250 then Nvidia would be in deep trouble & have to react but I doubt it will happen this year..........

I think as mentioned in one of the reviews that in terms of beating the competition (Nvidia), AMD 6900 series was designed to counter the gtx 470 and especially gtx 480. So with regards to this the 6900 series do perform considerably better.

However what brought all this down was 'GTX 580'. Now remember couple of months after the release of 5800 series, there was already mention of AMD 6000 series card which would be giving 20-25% increase over 5800 series.

Imo Nvidia taking these speculations into the account must have wanted a card that would beat the 6000 series cards comfortably which they did with 580. This was like breaking the AMD defence line and this caught the AMD off guard by the release of 580 and by this time the 6900 series were already finalised.

The 580 was kept so secretly that no one could have imagined that Nvidia were already designing 6000 series killer.

Had the 580 released earlier by couple of months then it may have been a different story:).

If only it had been 1920sp then we would all be sat here wetting our pants, I know that would in no way be trivial to achieve on 40nm with the extra ram as well but surely more than ~1500 is possible. The card can happily have a TDP of 300W

Well, this sure is a contrast to the 58**s last year. Talk about loosing touch. Looks like i'll be keeping my 5850 a while longer....

Hate to say it it, but "told you so".

Now I'm waiting for DrunkenMaster's 6 page analysis of how amazing the new AMD cards are and how Nvidia are cheating.

It seems to me AMD must have to sell the 69xx cards significantly cheaper than the NV counterparts but so far the oposite seems true really.

Guys I think we should start looking towards AMD 7000 series and probably these won't be as disappointing. But even then I doubt they would beat Nvidia Kepler:p. I think AMD needs to be as aggressive as Nvidia in producing cards and not care about power consumption and heat. All the AMD recent cards have been more powerefficient and producing less heat but have lower performance than the rival cards.

Now, a question of etiquette - as I pass, do I give you the ass or the crotch?

I hope the drivers can change anything with these cards as the current performance levels don't justify an upgrade for me really.

Surprised how bad the power draw is for an AMD card, I guess producing the goods in DX11 especially with tessellation is going to cost you your respected power efficiency, and Nvidia took it in the neck for it.

It does perform up there with the 580 in a few games and for less than £300 it's not a bad deal but it needs to come more in line with 570 pricing so £260. The real winner is the 6950 which is the card I would go for.

Give it a bit of time ATI will have to drop prices sooner or later after the initial rush there is going to be a lot of stock to sell! When people get theirs in the next few days & post real world results the picture will become clearer as so far most reviews are not highlighting negatives like very high Bluray playback power consumption so who knows what other little quirks will surface to deter buyers!

GTX570/580 hurt this launch but as Nvidia cannot get enough stock into the market they cannot sell enough to really hurt ATI right now. This is bad for the consumer as it means Nvidia will not need to drop prices much for now until (not if but when is a certainty) ATI drop theirs a bit.

If your in the market for a GTX570/580 next few days is a good time to buy as the low stock on those will get even lower methinks ;)

Meh.

Was looking forward to finally updating my 4870 to these new ATI cards. Let's not beat around the bush here, the 6970 needs to be £199 to make in a strong choice over the 570.
