The Show Off Your Tattoo Thread

I love the hinges - nice suprise :)

My attitude is that tattoos can tell a great story - when you're 90 and all wrinkly - Who will possibly care about your appearance? I'm sure you will take a look at yourself and be transported back to the time of your life you acquired the ink in question: hopefully with a smile :)

There are some (in my opinion) cringeworthy tattoos in this thread, but I tend to dislike anything tribal or done to an artistically poor standard; there are some bloody fantastic artists out there, but there are equally as many money-making-'Stampers' too :p

This is why we need a facepalm smiley:

I Belivid if there was a spelling mistake on a tattoo that I'd had done :p

I'm off on my stag do soon and hoping to get a tie fighter tattooed (need to find a good picture) somewhere on me (I know, its quite sad! My friends have already started to ridicule me)!! The stag is a weekend sailing to Isle of Wight, anyone recommend a tattoo artist there or in Plymouth?

Getting a tattoo around the time of sailing would be a bad idea I imagine. There's the chance you might bash it or get dirty sea water into it and cause infection I would have thought. I am no expert though!

A couple of questions to anyone with a tribal tattoo:

Did you choose it purely for aesthetic value or does it have a specific meaning (e.g. is there a history to your design, was it inspired by something you experienced or is it a traditional pattern that's been in use for centuries)?

Does anyone here have a traditional British (Celtic?) tribal tattoo?

Tribal tattoos.

If you're a white guy here then a Maori fella is probably going to think at best you're a dick, at worst someone he wants to have a few choice words with.

now i no way endorse tattoos of any kind but i'll just say that what passes for tribal tattoos these days don't have to be Maori design, they don't have cultural monopoly. and anyway - choice words? what, like "you can't have that tattoo because you are white"? Do they actually take themselves that seriously?

I like the look of swallows, but to tie in with my other tattoo, I need to add an element of death to it.. so here is what I had on the back of my right arm:

It's a dead swallow thats been impaled by a banner. The banner is also wrapped around it's wings. Just landed in a pile of leaves.

Sorry, but that looks like the doodling of an LSD user, I can make out leaves but the rest is pretty abstract, I'm trying real hard to see a dead anything with anything wrapped around it, let alone impaled, ran over by a bus maybe? Hopefully it's just a really bad Photo and it looks better in real life...

No they don't have cultural monopoly, I agree with you. It can get way out of hand very quickly indeed though. Not sure how familiar you are with Polynesian guys and Islanders in general but if your ink looks like you're taking the **** or it's shoddily done or is 'token Pakeha', someone is going to say something or **** your **** up. Not always and perhaps not even often but enough for me to have noticed it having lived here for only a year and a half.

Well I'd get the **** kicked out of me then due to having the worlds worst trible thing on most of my right arm, seemed like a good idea at the time maybe not so now.

No offence, although I don't see why you would get offended, but that is bloody awful. I'm guessing it's meant to be tinkerbell? It looks more like a witch. I'd be pretty ****ed if someone had done that to me.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo for 10 years now, prob more.

Just wondered if anyone had any general advice about getting tattoos? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for good tattooists in the West Sussex area?
