Why though? It requires as close to everyone as possible to fill it in, it's the same logic as jury duty, they want it to be a fair representation of the public, obviously with jury duty there are get-outs as it's a much bigger commitment than filling out a form while you watch tv.I have nothing to hide and I will fill out the form when it arrives. But how can they legally force you to fill it in? Seems like we should have the right to refuse if we wanted to.

They can't legaly force you to fill it in. Don't be scared by threats of £1000 fine. When the census people come round just don't disclose any information to them or sign anything and there can be no prosecution. Deal with them in the same you deal with the TV License Inspector.
WHat is it with people in this Country, ID cards, DNA databases and a little bit of paper to fill out and it against my rights, unless you have something to hide what really is the issue.
But I'm already running out of space for shallow graves in my garden. Maybe I should let this one live?![]()
Actually I'd be in favour of ID cards. I dont see the harm in them at all.
I'm staggered. We first got taught about the census in junior school, then in more depth in history lessons at secondary school.
If you were living at home in 2001 (the last census) you won't have actually filled one in yourself but I'm amazed people have never heard of them.
Do you mean to say that when they introduced the Vehicle Scrappage Scheme the Government might have based it on the 2001 Census?[TW]Fox;18522792 said:Exactly. It provides data which can be used to decide whether there is a need, or what sort of benefits might be realised by such schemes, etc.
When polite people come knocking on the door for 20 minutes of your time, whilst mentioning this is a legal obligation, I doubt many refuse.
why would you be in favour of ID cards?
Well they would have some practical benefits, like stopping underage kids buying booze and cigerettes (unless the shopkeeper is crooked of course, but thats a seperate debate).
Also good for getting into nightclubs and things if the bouncers think your too young. I'm almost 30 myself, but I imagine for younger people it would be a good thing.
Thats just one benefit I could think of on the fly. I'm sure there would be others.

The old "if you have nothing to hide.." very popular phrase during nazi germany and just about every other police state in existance

I bet you're great fun. They can't legaly force you to fill it in. Don't be scared by threats of £1000 fine. I'm guessing that you can't read, otherwise you would have read through the earlier posts and wouldn't need to ask... Why object to filling in a form? I'm assuming you can read and write.
