Ok, next important question to consider is, I currently browse and download at 1.6Mb/s. (My line can do 1.9Mb/s but i get the odd disconnection every few weeks)

Will essentially doubling this speed, really be noticable?

Basically more than halved my download times, places like Steam I never really see under 4meg/s

Example just bought Sim City, Took 4mins.

Even on torrents off peak I have pulled 4meg/s, the upload is ALWAYS capped to 1mbit tho for torrents..

I have a HTTP that my mates use to stream off me using VLC they can pull 1meg/s so not all p2p is capped.



Oh I moved from BeThere btw, Throughput of 2.1meg/s with them.

As for the word, shizzle, what a coincidence, thats my favourite word at the moment!

Yea I would hope not all p2p is capped, becuase I like to stream the football sometimes, and occasionally depending on the source its p2p streaming.

Maybe they just capped the bittorrent protocol?

Could you do me a favour and try to download something (anything) from oron, filesonic etc.....

Would be much appreciated.

I do have another question.

As fibre is a differnt technology to adsl2, does it not suffer from things such as line drops due to high speeds?

For instance, although I can set my current connection to 1.9MB/s, the 3Db noise margin, means that every few weeks the line will drop.

Would this still be an issue with BT's infinity?

The only disconnects I've had is when I turned the homehub off, at one point I had 15 days connected. The actual modem sync must have an up-time of 25days+ cant view the stats tho ^^


I don't have a filesonic, rapidshare ect account, so cant really test it I tried free mode and it hit like 350kb on filesonic.

Since you can upload files for free I tested the upload.. 1meg/s



If the upload to Oron isn't capped I am sure the download wouldn't be? I could be wrong tho..

So basically other than Bit torrent throttling, everything else should be fine.

I do a lot of errr downloading via things like rapidshare, oron, filesonic etc...... so those need to work.

however as I mentioned above periodically Be do block things like filesonic, rapidshare and oron, but I heard, so do BT, and with the whole Digital economy act, these things will be cracked down upon anyway....

Can you tell me what the engineer does on his visit to your house. I hear there are two modem/routers involved?

Also is it possible to install a master socket upstairs in my loft, its where I want the router to be. The wiring is the extension wiring however, but speed wise, I can get 1.9Mb/s out of my up to 24Mb Be connection.

I would be happy with speeds between 3Mb/s and 4Mb/s.

Also how long does it take them to install it? As in how long after ordering it, do they generally do it?

Can't help with lead times etc as I booked mine as I was moving house, so I told them when I wanted it doing and the phone line being activated etc.

With regards to the install..

The guy that did mine was happy to install a data extension from the master socket to where I wanted the modem installed. This extension is a CAT5 cable with a box on the end, and then a patch into the modem. The extension used on mine was around 5m and he was happy to drill through the door frames and tap the wires onto the wall etc.

There are two devices that are needed, the modem is what conencts to the master socket and then the homehub connects to the modem. Authentication is done from the homehub as it uses PPoE. You can use any router you want, but must use the provided modem.

The modems are prone to overheating, and I had to call out an engineer within 3 days of my connection going live to fix it. The fix was to wall mount it, and it has been fine ever since then.

Do you have power in the loft? If they won't install it up there, then what you could look at doing is having the modem down by the master socket and then run CAT5 up to the loft (in place of the phone extension) and have the router up in the loft.

hmmm, seems I would have to ask BT to come and look at my internal setup to tell me if its feasable to have BT infinity.

I have 2 problems:

1. I do not have a master socket period! (House built in the 1950's)
2. The extension I speak of, is all internal. I have a phone socket upstair in the loft, where I plug my modem in too.

Running a cable from a newly installed mastersocket up 2 floors in to the roof rafters, is probably beyound what they are willing to do.

Hypothetically, I could go full wireless. IE, have the new master socket installed on the first floor, and the use some super fast pci-e wirelss cards to get my internet connection.

But I really dont want that. Wired all the way.

*Just had a chat with an online BT representitve, they reckon I would get 40Mb/s...

It sounds like I would have to pay for an engineer to come and survey my house, to tell me if its possible to run the BT Infinity extension cable up to my loft.

Also being tweakers, is it easy to go in and tweak the router settings etc.... such as managing the wireless settings and setting your own dns server ip's?

easy to change the DNS etc yes.

where does your phone line come into the house? That'll be where they'll want to put the master socket. You could use a powerline adaptor to connect the modem to the router, shouldn't see a speed hit doing that. (I have T-Link 200mbps ones which happily max out the 100mb NIC in my old computer - does around ~95mbit)

They think I will get the max 40 MB speed! Could just be trying to entice me.

Anyway, they said it shouldnt be a problem with installing to meet my requirments, all I need is a mac code, the survey will be free, and if there are any issues, I can cancel and carry on with Be.

Question is do I do it!?

Netgear WNDR3700 - I like netgears, Had a DG834GT with Be and its been faultless. ~£110

If they say you can get max 40mb then it is most likely you will, however if they run an extension cable this might drop by a little. As for the line rental, if you take out BT Infinity Option 2 it works out to £40 a month and that includes the following:

Unlimited UK calls 24/7
1000 Minutes to 0845/0870 numbers
40meg/10meg download/upload speeds
No FUP

When I signed up last month the first 3 months were half price so might want to ask them about that as they may have an even better introductory offer now.

I moved from Be* to BT mainly due to the fact that on ADSL2+ I could only achieve 5meg whereas with BT Infinity I'm achieving 38meg and that's a huge boost for me as I stream/download quite a bit.

It's going to be hard to top Be*'s service to be honest but I haven't had any problems with BT yet. I just wish Be* would have offered FTTC sooner as I'd have gone with them for ease of mind.

Ah, ummm, i know for sure the Billion does ipv6 via a beta firmware. Not sure on the others though.

My friend had infinity installed yesterday, I was there when they installed it and asked a few questions.

His D side line is over 800 meters long and est speed was 25mb down and 6mb up

He synced at 40mb/10 solid and gets 37.5mb on speed tests and 11ms pings to bbc.co.uk

Well guys, the more I find out about this, the less reason I see why I shouldnt make the switch.

I need to be 100% sure that things like rapidshare, oron and filesonic, wont stop working if I switch from BE to BT.

Torrenting, is ok, I dont do that much and I can wait untill after 12am any way.

What about the whole phorm fiasco? BT cleaned up their act?

No more spying on their customers etc?

Also in terms of online gaming, the massive speed bump also translates to lower pings?

got excited for 2secs.. then.. contact bt and found out my local street box thing is'nt upgraded yet : (

I only get 1.6MB/s with Be, which is fine, but I could probably save money with a BTinfinity/phone bundle whilst more than doubling my speeds.

So it makes sense....

Just need to make sure, that im not jumping in to a hellish 18month contract.

Broken bit torrent and broken downloading from things like oron, and filesonic etc.. would not be a good thing.
