Ok I warned you. The knight of flowers and renly aren't gay in the books are they? Certain they aren't.

It's not shown explicitly in the books, but they are clues, I think GRRM has confirmed they are lovers in the book canon as well, but there's obviously no scene like in this episode.

I hadn't thought of it either, but thinking back about how close they are it does make sense

Thanks for that, I was beginning to doubt my memory of the book! :p Robert's 2 brothers did seem a bit like non-entities to me, so ANY characterisation at all is welcome even if it departs from the books a bit.

I really liked the combat scenes in this episode, you can tell the actors trained properly, and the choreography is very good! I always hated movies/tv series where the fight choreography is too "stage combat-ey", ie. they just bang their swords together to produce nice clanging sounds and make it look impressive but aren't actually going for each other! Or ones where the actors just swing clumsily like people in old 80s fantasy movies (I'm looking at you Arnie!), just lifting a great big two-hander overhead for loooong.... slooooooowwwww.... SWIIIIIIIIIIIING!!! which just leaves them open to getting stabbed in the stomach several times over in the time it takes them to do it (and roar threateningly). I get seriously annoyed by stuff like that, it's gotten worse since I actually started doing European historical martial arts since now I suddenly realize how unrealistic the fighting in most movies is!

But this one actually made me applaud at my tv with a silly grin on my face! :D Realistic distance, convincing attacks (they're going for each other, not for each other's swords), no stupid show-offy moves that would've gotten your head sliced open if you tried them in a real fight. Well, you do actually get a bit of clumsy swinging from the guards and stuff (and Jory, who promptly gets what he deserves for it!:p), but the main characters fight as well as you'd expect. No offence to Sean Bean but the dude who plays Jaime has evidently trained much more for this though. He does some genuinely hard to pull off moves, stuff he would've needed to drill for hours to make them look convincing even in a staged situation.

If I remember correctly things are going to start REALLY kicking off on an epic scale in the coming weeks, goody! :D

I've only just finished my first read through of them all, the Renly being gay stuff isn't mentioned explicitly but there's a good deal of inference to be taken.

Whilst I found the fighting refreshingly brutal in that you felt the actors really intended to hurt their opponents, I didn't really see that technical aspect at all - I'd love to see some swordplay from the Fiore dei Liberi or Talhoffer's Fechtbuch but I doubt we'll ever see it. They didn't even include half-swording, despite Gregor and Sandor going all out with a two hander and a ******* sword.

I think that the skill difference was intentional - despite the kingslayer taunts being thrown about, Jaime Lannister has had to give up everything to be a member of the elite Kingsguard and is regarded as one of the best (if not the best) fighters in all of Westeros. Eddard Stark is a Lord and his best fighting years are behind him; his favored weapon in the Uprising was a two handed valyrian steel greatsword named Ice. Going mano-a-mano with Jaime using a shortsword he didn't really have a snowball's hope in hell of winning.

Yup, the manure is about to hit the fan is epic fashion :D

Yeah I was totally confused by the gay bits until I questioned my brother about it and he said 'oh yeah it doesn't say it in so many words but it is suggested'. Turns out GRRM has confirmed it from a bit of googling I have done.

I can't remember but in the books was Lysa breastfeeding Robert during that confrontation in the Eyrie? I thought that scene was so funny, in a horrifying kind of way (if that makes sense lol).

Really enjoyed last nights episode.

My god this series alone makes my sky subscription worth it, the other stuff i watch on Sky Atlantic are a nice bonus.

Unfortunately i've got completely lost. I'm often watching characters that i have no idea who they are so went to the internet to do some research.

And now i've spoiled it for myself.

Hey ho, at least i now understand whats going on. Really, Really don't want it to turn out the way it does. Wonder how much the TV will deviate from the books. Not much if the current episodes are anything to go by.

Been recording this series to watch it all in one go, but im a bit worried...

A friend of mine has been watching it, he has read some of the books and said that i really should read them too, just to get a decent grasp of it all.

So, would i enjoy the series less because i havent read the books?
