Must agree though, had really big expectations of the tourney and it completely failed to deliver, it was more of a plot stage to usher thing along rather than a big event in itself.

Personally though I think Mark Addy has been great, portrayed Robert exactly how I expected him to be from the books.

I was really enjoying this until the recent gratuitous sausage shot and gay scene. I don't care how 'true' to the books that is, it's totally unnecessary.

It's not explicitly stated in the books but there are a lot of 'hints' :) Also, since it's a part of the books & given how many straight sex scenes there are in the books/in the series, it would have been weird for HBO not to show this.

Anyway, there are other good reasons for the scene. It provides some background about Renly & his motivations; it introduces the character of Stannis (the King's older brother); & it also gives more info about Loras & his family (the Tyrells)....all important stuff for the future :D

So, would i enjoy the series less because i havent read the books?

There'll be MANY more OMG  moments for you (the series will be FULL of them) if you haven't read the books. There are times when i'm watching it & wish i didn't know what was coming next. Then, there are other times when i've got a big smile on my face precisely because i know what great storylines are coming & how they link into what's happening now :D

I guess one of the benefits of reading the books is that you know the structure/set up of the different families & the power they have (each book has an appendix of this stuff at the end) which will probably be confusing to non-readers, at least at the start. Also, you'll know more about the different characters. For example, Lysa (Cat's sister) is clearly more than a little nuts :p, but if you know her backstory, you begin to better understand why she's the way she is.

I guess it's a trade off between OMG & a more quiet satisfaction ;)

Makes me wonder, if there are big battle scenes in the future, what they will be like... Another rerun of Sharpe, where an entire regiment consisted of 40 men?:p

I wouldn't worry, CGI has come a long way since then! ;) And the production values so far have been IMMENSE, outstripping most Hollywood blockbusters! HBO went all the way to Malta to film and so far there've been only about 2 scenes, by my guess, that were probably shot there. (Only been there once but I know what the landscape looks like, so I can sort of tell).

Plus, they imported about 20 tonnes of sand from Saudi Arabia to cover an entire Maltese beach in, sparking a massive environmental row, and so far the only scene that featured a sandy beach was Drogo and Daenerys getting it on for all of 20 seconds in the very first episode! That's extravagance right there! :p So I can't imagine them skimping on the battle scenes, whether on the extras or on the CGI.

Hah, some of you people;

Twin brother and sister screwing? - Fine
Kid getting thrown out a window? - No problem.
Young girl getting pretty much raped on her wedding night? - Pics please.
Animals being killed, faces smashed in, gushing blood - Meh

But homosexuality? Crrryyyyyyyyyyy.

Deal with it people, seriously.

Ok, i have ordered up some of the books but i have chosen not to read them until i have finished watching the series.

Thanks people...really looking forward to watching this now.

Finally got around to watching the episode this morning and WOW it was goooooooood. brilliant gory start to the ep which I loved, especially that horse getting it's head chopped off, I literally said "OOOFFT" out loud :) Nice bit of sword play too.

Really looking forward to see what happens with Ned in the next episode.

I also felt a bit awkward when that 10 year old boy was sucking milk from his mums boob, it was just ... weird.

That was a bit shocking. It was one of those 'did that really just happen?!!' moments.

Certainly went 'OOFFTT' myself (or some variation thereof :p) at the end when the guard gets a dagger in his head. Not a nice way to go.

I also felt a bit awkward when that 10 year old boy was sucking milk from his mums boob, it was just ... weird.

It was a bit umcomfortable, but i think that was the intention. Not having read the books, I'm guessing that kid is a bit..screwed up because of his mother?

Episode certainly didn't pull it's punches which was nice to see, so many other shows would have hidden things from the viewer or alluded to what happened but not shown anything!

Liking it a lot - be very interesting to see how Ned gets on in the next few episodes ...

Looking forward to seeing how this issue between the King and Ned plays out..

So many different story lines and plots going on at the same time... some times a little hard to keep up!!

Didnt really see much outside the seven kingdoms on this episode :(

Admit it, you liked the "shaving" scene. :p
