United withdraw interest for Rodwell and leave City and Chelsea in a bidding war

Norwich City Land Leeds United Star Bradley Johnson On A Free

Liverpool Plan £7.5m Bid for QPR Playmaker Adel Taarabt. - Random?

Tony Pulis reportedly flew out to meet Youssef Al Arabi to discuss contract talks.

Gervinho's agent admits Gervinho is likely to be a Newcastle player soon despite interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

Arsenal show interest in Madrid's Sergio Canales.

Its now rumoured that Inter Milan and Man City are ready to enter a bidding war for Kaka.

Liverpool reportedly going to make an offer for Lille star Eden Hazard as Ashley Young admis he wants Champions League football.

Apparently Liverpool target keisuke honda has chosen Athletico Madrid as his preffered club and ruled out a move to the Premier League.

Sadly when has it ever been as simple as comparing two players and going 'hmm, he's easily worth 1.45x a Carroll"?

We have Nasri for example going for possibly less than £10m. :/

Nasri wouldn't be worth 20mil if he was on a long contract, he's got a year left on his contract, so why should he be worth more than 10mil?

Carroll's price was dictated by Torres's price, and the time limits imposed on the deal, Liverpool showed their interest, there was little to no time left, they didn't have time to conclude a deal for another striker, that all massively effected the price. Likewise Carroll had just signed a new long term contract and loved being in Newcastle.

Modric, while having done well at Spurs, is someone higher up clubs see as a guy whose tasted the champs league, wants the champs league and will want to move onwards and upwards from Spurs, again effecting his value.

If Spurs were in the CL again, then Modric might be worth more, but Spurs not being in the CL mean Utd can offer something Spurs can't, and that also means Modric could look to leave/ask for a transfer, which effects his value.

When everyone randomly ignores things like time left on contract, what the various clubs can offer, and the likelyhood of the player to want to stay, sure all transfer fee's seem absolutely illogical, when you factor in all the pretty obvious things, transfer fee's aren't particularly hard to work out.

Bent's one of the best strikers in the league, he's proven over many seasons and is up their with the best 3-4 in the league in terms of goals scored, ultimately what they are being bought for, 24mil isn't even remotely expensive for him. Just the random reputation England players get, Theo absolutely beloved at Arsenal for being English yet shouldn't play anywhere above the league one. Young barely wanted at Liverpool or Utd, yet deserves to be first team for England without a shadow of a doubt. Bent, clearly the most consistant England striker in the league for years yet zero respect.

I honestly can't explain it, but its got a huge effect on the value people perceive for these guys. People saying Young's never worth 15mil +, Bent at 24mil is a joke, if they were Brazillian, French, Spanish, people would be begging for their club to match their 30mil + valuation.

I honestly can't see Arsenal selling Nasri to MU for less than we paid for him, be that £12m or whatever. I think Wenger would rather sell him elsewhere for less or maybe even just run down his contract.

Obviously if they come up with a figure of £15m+ then the board will need to consider it.

The real sales need to be around the likes of Denilson and Bendtner, bench warmers who have supposedly declared themselves unhappy and have been linked in the press with 'big' money moves, can't remember the exact figures but supposedly £8m+ for Denilson and £10m+ for Bendtner, no point messing about and paying their wages over the summer lets line up the deals now and get them shipped out on 1st July.

Recouping such a large investment on a player who was a flop is good business.... so it wouldn't ;)

Would take Darren Bent over any of our other strikers any day of the week, and thats saying something because I think bent is rubbish.

Spurs need to clear out big time. So many fringe players like Bently, Keane, Hutton (we have walker primed and ready), Kranjar (underated by Harry) who could all raise the kitty. Plus players like Defoe and Crouch could all raise good money in todays overinflated market. Desperatly need an out and out striker.

.
Why pay £15m for a player with 1 year on his contract?

Just offer the player £5m in bonus to run his contract down and leave for free. £10m saved.

I'd take Bent over Crouch or Keane. Defoe will bounce back with a good pre-season and I'd take Pav over Bent any day. Come back at me with all the stats in the world I don't care....

were liverpool in the cl when they got £50m for torres? no, same with newcastle and carrol. i really doubt it has that much effect on the price.

and to the other poster who mentioned about spurs paying more for defoe than we sold him for. we were over a bit of a barrel, he was out of favour due to the keane and berbatov partnership and would've left for free in the summer if we didn't sell when we did.

Why just quote 25% of my post and choose to ignore the rest?

I didn't ignore the rest my point was better served by only quoting the conclusion.

I was saying football transfers is a mad world, and that most of the time the selling club doesn't always get what it wants.

But then you could look at it in other ways, pulling what ever reasons you wanted to justify our strange out going transfers compared to other clubs.

Yes Nasri has a year left on his contract compared to 3 for Modric. However, our guy has played for three years in the Champions League compared to a one off for Spurs for example. Ours is younger.

You agree with the point I made - calculating transfers is by no means an easy task. However over the years as an Arsenal fan do you not think that more often than not, when looking at other clubs we're looking for reasons to justify that in comparison we haven't made a balls up on out going players?

Sure Bentley was great with the sell on clause. But I think Nasri is going for cheap now. Henry for however Barca moaned still turned out 80 appearances. Considering who the guy is E24m is a bargain and at only 29, going to a slower league. Gallas was probably the buy of the season for Spurs and he was free.

Yes there are reasons and Wenger likes to cite his age policy, etc. etc. But we don't seemingly sell like other clubs and it's always struck me as odd.

Daily Fail saying that Young to United will go through in the next couple of days, I'll admit I've come round to the possibility of us signing him now in a 'he'll be good for the squad kind of way'

Henderson to Liverpool also looks like it's going to happen, he played well for the under 21's the other day best I've seen him tbh, could potentially be a very good long term replacement for Gerrard

Looks like deals to sign Wickham and Henderson should be tied up in the next few days. They may not be the glamour names that some people want but they'd both be decent additions to our squad imo, however they don't completely address our immediate needs. Hopefully this is just the start of a very productive transfer window for us.

If any club can bring the most out of Young, United can... but still this is far from what most Manjoo fans were hoping for from Fergie's cheque book in the past two years.
