Where was the police and why did they not stop all the property damage ?

what a joke.

You can barely fart in this country without a helicopter being deployed and you expect me to believe some worthless low life's managed to steal and loot before the police could show up.

I have seen an electric explosion in london on a construction site and it caused for the whole road to be called off, two fire engines, 8 police cars and a helicopter.

Something is wrong with that one. Just shows when it comes down to it, the police are not prepared to risk their necks for some private property.

what if there where 400 explosions at the exact same time?

Manners please

Sorry who edited my post? and why, I see absolutely nothing wrong with what I wrote. and yet some of the stuff in here has been allowed?

Yeah and I'm not Superman, I cannot see every post Grow up!

I was at work today just thinking, if I was talking to David Cameron or a senior police figure, I would say to them something along the lines of:

If you were to ask the majority of upstanding law-abiding Britons, most probably wouldn't be upset if some of these yobs got a clip round the ear with a riot shield. I can understand how when you have planned protests that have got a little bit out of hand, that police wading in with an 'over the top' response could be inflammatory.

But if you want to talk about inflammatory, you only have to look at people having their homes literally set on fire. The situation I was watching from behind the safety of my computer screen in my sleepy town on Monday night was totally out of control (and totally unprovoked in my eyes too). This was not just protesters causing a bit of criminal damage here and there, this was wanton desctruction of peoples lives. People are losing their businesses, people are losing their homes, and now people are losing their sons. If only 10% of the damage caused earlier in the week had been caused by terrorists, we'd be expecting a tough response. In my eyes, these people are terrorists and we should take all steps necessary to prevent their actions.

I've now watched that video and big wow, the guy gets hit about a couple of times and put on the ground, not even close to the danger we've seen officers come up against from mobs charging and pelting with missile, not even close to the horrors faced by families living in flats being torched from underneath them. It's not a Rodney King incident, they aren't stamping his face into the kerb, the guy got off really lightly compared to what could have happened (and I'm not condoning anything here, I'm just pointing out that it didn't look like the police were out of control, they were just putting what was presumably a criminal on the floor in a violent manner).

I'd bet that apart from the lefty do-gooders around that a large percentage of the British populace aren't really concerned with the "victims" welfare. I won't lose any sleep over it, but I am saddened for the repercusions this may have with the officers involved.

What concerns me now is how are the prisons going to cope with a sudden influx of new arrivals? The prison service is over-stretched and subject to coalition spending cuts, so morale must be low there too.

Simple yet effective eh :D

These types of people are of no use to anyone they acted like animals so cull them like animals! Extreme... but I bet they would have thought twice before stepping outside to cause millions of pounds worth of damage.

Harsher punishments would scare a lot of the opportunists away I reckon.

While i would impose harsher punishments, the most important thing is efficiency and capability.

The police should have been able to deal with this.

Personally i would throw everything that is possible at it, and of course follow my law of escalation.

If there are not enough police then the military should be brought in. If soldiers do not intimidate them then live ammunition will be authorised.

What would deter people if i was in power would not be the punishment, it would be the immense response and fury that will follow. The realisation that i would have everything at my disposal, that everyone will know that i would never ever back down, and show no mercy.

Many riots have occurred and in all of them, the police are on TV just sitting back doing nothing... Im not a psychologist but i firmly believe that people will push boundaries until they reach a wall, they will slowly escalate their actions. The government and the police are too busy being scared of criticism, and opt for the "lets do nothing" strategy.

Just watching BBC News now, some of the berks trying to justify the looting, leaves you speechless.

Indeed

the sentences so far have been in the weeks haven't they? Its not long enough is it!

As far as I'm aware, only two were given out and they were for what would normally be minor offences with low punishments. I may have misheard, but that's what I remember from when it was announced.

Also, who is the woman in the middle on Sky news? Pretty annoying. :/

What are you talking about? The police have done a great job considering the restriction placed upon them by government and the funding, and how widespread the disruption has been.
